Does anyone have any suggestions, measurements, etc. for proper hoop placement?

Charlie: If you can wait ... come measure My DADs and Recaros next Sunday and see which will work for you. You are welcome to swap them in and out of the Targa. If you are putting DADs in your Targa ... then my car will be identical.

As far as suggested spacing ... from what I have seen there is a standard size spacing on the harness guide hoops. This spacing and their attachment (construction) is critical should you ever want to use a HANS device. Go to HANS site to see detailed info on harness guide hoop placement. The purpose ultimately is to prevent the straps from separating any more than is necessary although the seat-back holes have a more direct affect on this. Most racing seats and aftermarket seats with shoulder harness pass throughs have a standard spacing. You can measure it on some of the seats I have (Recaro, DAD, Sparco, Clubman, Cobra) and get an average #.

I have all the dimensions from a BK harness bar, thanks to Andy. I forgot to get the actual hoop width. If someone can provide this last dimension from a BK harness bar, I can probably have the bar back by the March DE.

There are some on this site that have installed bars in cabs to good effect. Adding harness guides to the horizontal brace of a roll bar would use the same center line measurements.

Harness bars are used to better locate 4 or 5 belt harnesses. These harnesses positively locate the body in an upright position, very good in high G driving. In the case of a roll over harnesses also keep your body upright even as the roof collapse around your very upright head. Harnesses should b used in conjunction with roll bars. There are a number of videos showing roofs collapsing on this site. We used a bar for a full season in the SC before someone finally pointed out the down side

I would not dissuade anyone from using "safety" equipment, as long as it is used as part of a system. Personally I feel comfortable using a harness bar with race seats and 5 point harness in a Targa. One of our instructors did a roll over, before my time, coming down the chute, no problems and that car is still a beauty. I don't recall seeing any photos of coupes with significant roof intrusion, certainly seen the roof pushed down an inch or two to the roll bar. The harness bars for coupes and Targas are significantly different with the Targa one having a brace that runs down to the lower outside seatbelt mounting points adding a little bit more rigidity to the chasis. If you are thinking Club Race get a coupe as it will save you a considerable amount of weight over a Targa.

No Chris. The shoulder straps are holding the driver/passenger updright.

BTW, you'd want to have a 5 or 6 point harness for Club Racing. For DE, it's a good idea (but noit req'd), too.

NO 4 point in DE. Not even in the car unless rendered unusable and the driver only uses the stock 3 point. I agree with Dirk. Porsche coupes are hard to crush and I have seen some high energy rollovers but none with a roof that crushed into the drivers "space". Impacts are far more common that rollovers and roof crushing rollover events are very rare in DE.

I agree that it's hard to dent the Targa bar enough to be concerned about it in a DE, but at the same time, there's always "Murphy's Law" and it only takes a 1/4" to compress your spine... better mount that bucket *real low*
