Default Bad Snow Day - Ironic

We live on a steep hill. When we had the "little" snow on Wednesday, I was driving up the hill, completely lost traction, and then, in a very unfun way, began sliding backwards down the hill. No steering, no stopping, no contolling it, it was like a real life nightmare, just gathering speed and watching out the back as I got closer and closer and then BAM, rear ended my own van, which doubles as my tow vehicle, that was parked on the street facing downhill. Both vehicles sustained plenty of damage.

When I explained the event to my insurance company, the claims rep was at first confused as to how I rear ended two vehicles at the same time, the she says, "You'd be surprised how often this happens." "Oh, this happens a lot?" "Well, no, not really..."

Here's the ironic part: I was going home to move the van off the street so that nobody would hit it.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune! But you better watch out for the SC parts vultures now -- they will be circling! :P

Us Carrera owners, however, wish both your 911 and van a speedy recovery.

That's a bummer. Must have been a helluva a hill to bang them both up so bad.

Yours in an exception, but two car crashes within a household are kinda common. My friend was following his fiance (or vice versa) and they collided at a light.

I think one of the major insurers even had a commercial about that a couple of years back.

That's terrible. What a sinking feeling you must have had in the seconds before impact. On the up side, you can view this as an opportunity for upgrades.

That really sucks. I hope the SC is repairable.

No, no, no. I didn't mean to confuse. This was only "Porsche related" insofar as it wrecked my tow vehicle. The SC is safe and sound in a heated garage out in Luray. (I'm going out next week for the installation of new torsion bars and brake master cylinder.) I was driving a Volvo. With front wheel drive you'd think it would have better traction. Now I'm wondering... the SC probably would have made it up the hill better.

We had all kinds of trouble on Wednesday as well. We have a Saab 9-5 turbo wagon on Yoko ES100's. Even on flat ground (snow) we couldn't get traction. Even in "winter mode" the front wheels just spun. I put on a set of Bridgestone Blizzac's. What a huge difference! I had no idea tread compound mattered so much. I was always under the impression it was what kind of drive system that made the difference, such as all wheel drive, front wheel drive, or rear wheel drive. While I'm sure these do factor in, I think tread compound is most important.

I would not think the compound would have too much effect on top of snow/slush, but tread pattern and skinny tyres would. Had an old Renault R4 van way back, front wheel drive, found it a lot easier going up hill on the farm roads or when stuck in reverse. As long as the snow is not too deep , 911s do pretty well as long as you are gentle with all your in puts.

Winter tires rule!

I've used them on my Mustang and now use them on our BMW 3 series. No problems even being rear wheel drive.

Nothing beats the right pair of "shoes" .
