Default H4 upgrade - what's needed?

Planning to buy the kit and the bulbs (and new sealer rings) as an early Xmas present for myself - what else do I need to put these on the 84? Should just be plug and play, right? I think the only mods are wiring that's necessary for 87s-89s.

Is pelican the best/cheapest place to buy? Paragon's selection doesn't have a clear description of what's needed.

Upgrade your wiring with relays.. The Surco kit uses the stock wiring to the lights.
Daniel Stern Lighting is a kit with the relays, terminal ends, etc. to build your own harness. He also has high output bulbs for tails, markers, etc.

Sucro kit:

I am getting ready to order some stuff from Daniel Stern. The components that he sells look to be higher quality. I have some 100/80 W bulbs that I'm going to be running, so the stock wiring will not do.

* New gaskets
* H4 assemblies
* Relay kit (don't skimp on this)
* Install screws. These are special stainless steel screws. They typically come with the assy but be sure.

You'll have to decide if you want painted trim rings or chrome. If you want chrome, buy the H4 chrome assys, install and enjoy. To get painted rings (which is the "right" way for your car) you have two options:

1. Buy the "primered ring" H4 kits, disassemble them completely and have the rings painted. Reassemble and install.

2. Buy either the chrome or primered kits (doesn't matter) and then get the trim cover rings. The cover rings snap on over top the H4 assemblies and cover the base ring. This is the option I went with because (a) its easier - those H4s can be a PITFA to disassemble and (b) you can install the base H4 assemblies and use them while the rings are getting painted.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I was thinking I'd go w/ option 2 for now (the black kit from pelican) and then buy the snap-ons for later when I want to spend the $/have the time to go get them painted. Jazz, did you use the relays that Clarke is suggesting as well? How did they work for you?

Rick, I can't see you car from the front...doesn't it have the H4s already as being a Euro car? Weird.

I think the Sucro kit and what you'd get from Daniel Stern is the same thing. The difference is that Marcus Sucro puts in stickers for the wires and some instructions to make it foolproof.

I painted my rings myself. I had some used rings from a guy on Pelican. I just got some paint from the shop in Herndon and rattle canned it in the driveway. It came out well.

I found that the screw at the bottom of the housing really didn't want to go into the tab on the car. I cleaned it a little bit with a tap and still has some difficulty getting it into place. I think the new gaskets will make it a bit of a struggle..it's doable though.

I actually rewired most of my headlight circuit and installed stock round relays that fit into empty holes in the fuse box. I then ran new 12ga wires to all the headlights because I'm running 100w high beams for night-country driving. Using the stock relays gives a nice, clean appearance but I don't recommend it unless you're comfortable taking the fuse box off and messing around behind it.

I've heard good things about the Sucro kit, most significant of which is that it's easy to install.

Very much so. Jazz works on a different level than us mere mortals. Why do one thing when you can rewire 1/2 the car in the process?

Got it, thanks. Yeah, I'll have to take the easy DIY route and go w/ the sucro kit. Steve, my car is a RoW car but came w/ the sugar scoops. Not sure why.

What did you use for headlight sockets? Stern's kit has high temp ceramic light sockets. I like the idea of using the empty holes in the fuse box.

It is my understanding that H4s were not legal in the USA until the early '90s. My car was imported in '88 and has the sugar scoops.
