I'm getting ready to do a lot of maintenance work on my 1977 911 Carrera 3.0 this winter. This weekend I'll be pulling the engine and tranny. The tranny has 100k miles on it and 1st and 2nd gear synchros are not good and I'm sure there are other things needing to be replaced. If I had the time and tools I'd consider rebuiling it myself, but I have neither. Anyone out there do tranny rebuilds on the side or know of a good shop?
I'm new to the forum but it looks like an awesome resource. Thanks.

Welcome Dave. Sorry, no shop recommendations from me, but Marc A did this last winter, and he did a write up on it for our local PCA rag. Here the link to his rebuild: http://www.pelicanparts.com/MotorCit...nnyRebuild.htm

Dave:
Depending on how soon you need it, I would be willing to do the re-build. Price would depend on how many internals need to be replaced. I can guarentee that you will need 1st and 2nd syncros, dog teeth, sliders, brake bands, and anchor blocks. 3rd might need the same. 4th and 5th are probably ok. The other alternative is to send the Tranny to the guy in Connecticut that advertises in Panorama. He is very well thought of. Vertex Auto in Florida will send you a tranny for about 1300 and they you have to return yours to them. PM me if you are interested.

Gary Fairbanks is one of the best 915 men around. Great service - he will send you a purpose built crate to ship your tranny, and return it finished in a similar crate. Prices are very reasonable.
If you can sweet talk Marc into doing it, you will get a superb rebuild and have a chance to see it all done, which is the best way to learn. With luck, Marc will give you a break on his daytime hourly rate Be careful with Vertex. Some guys have great stories, but there are others as well. They are almost always the cheapest price, but the quality control is not what it could be from what you see posted around the boards. I have no personal experience with their rebuilt stuff.

I blew the first gear sync's dog teeth a couple of months ago, so the Carrera's 915 and engine are coming out this weekend. I plan to tackle the rebuild mysefl, so any advise will be welcomed.
If any of you want to watch or help with the engine drop, you can reach me at arivera911@yahoo.com. I live in Cascades and plan to start around 10 on Saturday. 9philes welcomed. The engine is all ready to come out except for the shift coupler and 4 mounting nuts. Hopefully I will also separate the engine from the tranny afterwards. Alex arivera911@yahoo.com

Good luck Alex,
fellow Dorki's please come to aid of one of ours. Alex lives near Jim Richards and me in Sterling/Cascades. He was around long before Dorki with a beautiful 84 Concours winning arena red coupe. Anyway, he is currently holding the engine stand and requisite tools from my stash. I'll be coming home from Vegas on the 'red-eye' Saturday, so I will be as helpful as usual

Marc just finished a wonderful rebuild on the trans. Now all I have to do is finish all the other misc projects on the engine so I can install everything and take it for a drive. (Don't worry, I'll invite the Dorki faithful to help/watch/drink coffee/beer.
Thanks to Marc.
