Default "manners maketh the man"

Keith,

Congratulations on selling your '89 911; from the photographs it looks like a very good example.

Recently I tried to contact you by phone (left a message) & by email to make a serious enquiry about buying the car. I was dissapointed that you did not reply.

I wish you no ill will but would remind you that good manners cost nothing.

I hope the 911 transaction goes smoothly & enjoy your 356.

Geordie

I think I saw an ad for your car hanging on a corkboard where I work. It was hanging in Tower II, was that your car?

Yup, that was my car. Daughter worked hard to get it to fit within the strict cork board posting requirements of 1/2 page...sheesh.. .

This has been the wildest sale I've ever been through - with more then a few people upset at the outcome, regardless of my numerous attempts to be as fair as I possibly could be. I had serveral very serious buyers from that cork board, and Craig's list going back three weeks. It went something like this...

Within 24 hours of the first posting I had 6 people offer me full price over the phone and ask hold the car. I told them I would not hold the car without a deposit, but would schedule visits if they'd like to see it (#6 was the eventual buyer). I scheduled them in the order they replied to see the car. Two showed, neither made offers. I had two remaining out of state buyers who also offered full price, and wanted to schedule to see the car and have a PPI. One of the out of stater's hesitated and went to look at another car.

I told the California buyer I'd let him know definitively Saturday - everyone else was 'getting the money, but no deposits' - I told #1-#5 folks I was ready to accept another offer. That Friday night I got an 11th hour call from a Leesburg gentlemen who'd seen it on the cork board. I told him I was planning to accept an offer but if he'd like to see it, hed need to do so that night, I'd be calling the other potential buyer that evening to formally accept. He said he'd just looked it up in Excellence, and it was over priced, and that if the deal fell through to call him back, and might come see it.

Eager to just get this over with, I immediately called the California buyer back and closed the deal. He said he was committed, and we agreed to have the car PPI'd at Curry's on Monday. It was done, but the story continues...

No more then 30 minutes after I hang up, the local guy calls back, he's made a terrible mistake, and offers full price or better to sell to him. I refuse - I've already sold the car. Next morning he calls back again, with an offer of a cash deposit (which I'm reminded I don't have yet from California). I again politely refuse the offer (I gave my word).

If that isn't enough, the second out of state buyer #5 calls Saturday and does the same exact thing. I try to explain to them both that if I were buying from out of state (i have), and the seller sells the car from underneath me after we had a deal (it's been done) I'd be pretty upset.

Regretfully I have a handfull of people mad at me, but I tried to do the right thing. I sold to one of the original 6, didn't run up the price, and kept my word.

Sorry for not replying to the PM, I didn't want to introduce another party into the fiasco at a late date, when I was still dealing with a number of original inquirers.

Loaded the car in the car carrier today for the trip West.

Keith

Keith,

Sorry to see the car go. Of the ones I am aware of, I think that leaves me and Mike L as the '89 contingent

As for the angry people, you can't please everybody all the time so....

That's pretty much how my 944 sale went as well.
