I was behind this nice yellow (old) beetle with yellow minilite wheels. On the decklid it said "fuel injection". Since it's German and it's like a 911, what kind of FI did the Beetles have? CIS, MFI? I never realized that they had FI so I was kind of surprised.

I believe it was L-jetronic in 76. It was a gutless wonder to drive. Bosch used a power relay under the rear window that died all the time. (this was akin to the DME relay--first generation).

Yup, all the way through the '79 supers. Not sure what the rest of the world got after that. I don't think that it was any less powerful than the '73 standard I had. They were all gutless but FUN!!!

wasn't it discontinued in 79? ROW maybe had carbs....Rabbit came in in... what 76? 75? 76? wonder what the made in mexico beetles had for induction?

The first rabbits had carbs. I think they got FI in '76. I knew a guy who had a '75 Scirocco with carbs and had the worst luck with it.

I would think that even on beetles, they wouldn't go backward, however, we only got the super by the time FI was introduced so I guess it is possible that ROW bugs had carbs.

I had an '84 Beetle with carbs. I don't know if they had carbs in other countries, but mine had them.

My 75 beetle originally came with FI.

I quickly swapped it out for dual Webers at the time.

I think so. Early VWs had D-jetronic, but I'm pretty sure the beetles got L-jetronic after it came out on the 914. L-jet is basically the ancestor to Motronic. L-jet didn't control ignition timing and used a completely analog brain instead of a microprocessor based ECU like Motronic. Otherwise, the systems are surprisingly similar, esp when compared to CIS, MFI or D-jet.

1975 was certainly fuel injected. I think even late 1974 could have had injection. Just like 914s.
