The problem with stating a salary is that may not be all of your compensation, what about bonus, stock options or grants, deferred compensation, 401k match, and even cars & perks? If you just put down a salary you may be selling yourself short, total compensation is what matters.

yes; and depending on the line of work there may be others as well; and all subject to negotiation. sometimes it's good to have someone representing and/or advising you in those negotiations, depending on the complexity.

I never state salary requirements even when asked by hr or a recruiter. Ask them the salary range and see what they say! If you are getting too many interviews than good for you keep going. Otherwise see if the job fits, check all other benefits, then you can assess what the job is worth to you. Always shoot higher because they will negotiate you down.

Get the offer first, and then you can negotiate salary.
x 2.....werd what he said......*maybe* give them a ballpark figure verbally, but leave the negotiation until after they make an offer

The majority of resumes last less that two minutes on my desk so the first thing is to peruse skill sets and current job and make sure they meet basic requirements. Then make sure they haven't had 12 jobs in the last two years. If they make it past that, then I may read the cover letter because there is some interest. Most of the time they get ignored because they are overly glowing, fluffy, and identical.

Salaries are flexible. Sometimes in the 20-40K range. So limiting yourself by stating a salary may limit your top end. People may also discount your skill sets if you are well below what they are looking to pay.

What sort of job are you looking for? I'm looking for several more folks at the moment.
I'm a bank manager.
