Default How to Run a Cable Through Firewall in 944

I'm relatively new to the forum. I have a silver race prepared 944 Turbo, and am purchasing a Racepak IQ3 data logger/digital dash. I ran last year with the Porsche Club at Summit in March, Watkins Glen, and VIR in September.

I need to get the sensor bus (called Vnet cable) from the dash area into the engine bay. There are two options:

(1) run a single cable but I will have to drill a big hole through the firewall, or somewhere else because the terminal/connector on the cable is huge.
See the below picture:

It's tough to tell the size of the connector but this picture which shows a similar picture might help:

(2) mount a special firewall passthrough and use two cables. This option will probably cost an additional $90 because I need to buy a second cable and the bulkhead connector. The size of the hole is probably the same for each option, but the bulkhead connector might make the job look neater, but this is not that important since things will be hidden. Without the bulkhead connector, there is a danger of the cable getting cut at the point it passes through the firewall.
See http://fuelsafe-hrpworld.com/index.c...action=product

So my two questions:

A. Do I use the special firewall passthrough connection and increase costs by $90?

B. Where do I make such a big hole to get the signals from the engine compartment to the interior/dash?

Thanks for your help.

Jim

Take out the DME under the passenger seat floorboard. There is a big rubber plug that goes through the firewall to get the wiring to the engine compartement. You may be able to squeeze it thorugh there. That's how I did the wiring for my oil temp guage.

If your car is "race prepped" I wouldn't car about drilling a big hole and using a plug of some sort (I think it has to be plugged per PCA rules), just that the access area to work is very limted.

What Steve said + there are plenty of existing holes for things like air conditioning lines etc. JazzBase rewired an earlier model 944 last year for one of our more intrepid members. Lots of information in that thread. Search is your friend BTW the more $$ option looks the best to me!

Jim,
Where did you buy your sensors? I have a G2X and haven't found a cheap(er) supplier for them.

I plan on purchasing them from Moto-Delta.com. http://moto-delta.com/store/index.ph...x&cPath=69_395

They are giving me a small discount. If you have a good source, please let me know as I have not bought them yet. Either post or shoot me an email jimlaurak@yahoo.com.

Thanks.
