Default parking brake adjustment 911

1980 911 SC

I'm trying to do a parking brake adjustment on my 80 911.

Bentley manual says to insert a small screwdriver into the access hole and move the star-wheel to tighten the parking brake pads.

I'm just not "getting it"... don't have a feel whether I'm making the connection and clicking the adjustment device.. Do you feel a definite "click"??

Has anyone removed the rear disk hub? Looks like it's attached via some very large phillips screws.. torque on these???

I think if I removed the disk hub > I'd have better access to the parking brake adjuster..

on a different note >>

1997 Mercedes C230 >>
Does anyone know what tech manuals are available? I've pinged the Haynes web site >> seems like they don't have any manuals for 1990 series Benzes.. Bentley doesn't do Mecedes.. no joy with Clymer... Do all Mercedes owners take their Benzes to the shop??

Really like this site >> have got alot of good info from it over the years..

It's not a definite click because the star is rubbing against the spring. If everthing was new or clean and lube well you would feel it, but not quite a "click". The phillips screws don't get torqued ver much, but rust doesn't help. I have a impact scredriver that you hit with a hammer. This drives the bit into the screw and twists at the same time. This way you won't strip the head of the screw. If you do/did you can then just get a drill that's a little larger than the diameter of the screw. drill into the center of the head. when you get thru the part with the head the head will pop off.
At that point you can pull off the rotor and grip the part of the screw that is sticking out with vice grips. The impact drivers are at sears for less than $20 I think. another alternative is drill the screw and try an easy out type screw extractor also sold at sears.

Once you get the rotor off you can remove the adjuster, clean and lube it.
There is a certain direction it goes in so before you remove it record if the star is on the top or bottom of the adjuster.
They are different on both sides.

You can't adjust until it's all back together.
Also see if there is any slack on the cable's first. The adjustment is with the 2 nuts that lock each other where the cable goes into the tube at the inside of the hub.
Good luck!

I agree with Bill, the click isn't always that pronounced and you can't adjust the parking brake with the rear hubs off. That's what the em. brake shoes push against.

Remember, when removing a fastner, and more than normal pressure does not turn it, try tightening it a little. This breaks loose the corrosion on the parts and breaks some resistance. The remove as planned. It doesn't work all the time, but you will be surprised how many times it does. 8)

PS Arf has a lot of these types of fastners!

You can get the Mercedes factory Cd's from Mercedes in NJ. The CD set is about 100.00.

What the others say but also it couldn’t hurt to remove the rear rotors & clean the e-brakes w/brake clean. Since you have the calipers off too you can check the pads & push the pistons in (slowly!) to make sure they don’t stick. After cleaning the e-brake try turning the star wheel from the outside & note which direction the shoes move. I just did this on my ’84 beater & found all 4 shoes cracked
