It looks like the HPDC will be visited Saturday by a mad Russian named storm. Are these events that go forward no matter what or is there a cancellation policy? By the time it reaches us it will be down to heavy, heavy rain and wind gusts up to 50mph.

I was expecting more information from Cheseapeake about the event. So far, I have received one email and I know they cashed my check. I understand they have a classroom but I don't know what the agenda looks like?

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I have seen little information as well. Things like the time, schedule, etc would be nice.
I will trade rainy weather any other day for a nice/passible day on Saturday.

Not sure about the cancellation policy for inclement weather, but here's a couple of data points. My first HPDC was run in on/off rain. This year's Mid-Ohio DE had a lot of rain for 2 of the event's 3 days.

I have never heard of a cancelation because of weather; but a tropical depression (Ivan) by the time it affects us maybe different. These events have always been run rain or shine, stopping only if the track is dangerous from standing or running a river or if there are lightning strikes endangering the corner workers. I don't know of any policy on refunds unless the track management cancels the event.

My guess is that the organizers were at VIR this past weekend. I would send an email with questions to any / all of the following:

The schedule for these have been the same over the past few years. I would "assume" that it would be the same for this one. Morning rotation going from station to station, lunch, afternoon track sessions with your instructor. The morning schedule leaves very little time between rotations. You'll rotate through stations for 1. skid pad 2. weight transfer / cones - accident avoidance 3. threshold / trail braking in curve.

I would plan on getting there around 6:30 a.m. (even earlier if you want to kick tires, swap lies and bench race a little

Rain hasn't stopped the event in the past ... only made it more exciting. However, I do not know what the thoughts / plans are with Ivan type weather on the horizon.

Because the schedule is chock full the HPDC day begins with an EARLY arrival at the Jefferson Circuit. Try to arrive by 6:30am! The gate will direct you to the proper track (there are 2). Upon arrival at the "paddock" (parking lot) find an empty parking space and unload all loose items. Place these on the recommended tarp and fold the tarp over to protect your stuff from the elements. Then go to Registration in the only building in sight. Get your schedule, name tag, and car number then place a lunch order. Now drive your car to the tech inspection line, somewhere in the paddock. After tech inspection, park again then go to the classroom for some coffee.

The HPDC proper begins with a classroom briefing on the day's activities. After the briefing until lunch you will rotate between classroom, driving exercises, and skidpad driving exercises. No special clothing besides closed toe rubber soled shoes is required for the morning portion of the HPDC. No helmet is required for the morning exercises.

The afternoon is devoted to the OPTIONAL lapping sessions. These are very much as done at a Drivers' Education event and so to participate you must be dressed in accordance with DE requirements: long pants and long sleeves of natural fibers and a helmet. Helmet rentals are not available at the track, but OG Racing is one place to rent helmets.

This is off the the PCA Potomac site. You do NOT need helmets for the morning exercises.

Since this is the Chesapeake region, are SA helmets required for the lapping sessions, or will a standard motorcycle helmet be ok?

I believe that SA rated helmets (1995 or later) are required for this event. As far as I know, no PCA Potomac or Zone 2 event allows use of M rated helmets.

If you are concerned about a helmet, they do have bat-up loaners there, call OG Racing and arrange for a rental to be available at the track. Its not very costly. The new standard will not be out until the Fall of 05 and that is when the 95s become obsolete. Of course you could buy a 2000 spec helmet now and it will last for a long time.

I believe it is wise to rent one at this stage, since you are not really sure when you start how serious you will be about the sport and if you decide to pursue the sport, your initial rental fee may go toward the purchase of a helmet.
