Default SC oxygen sensor wire question

I am trying to get my car ready for the emissions test,

I have a 83SC with the following issue:

The plug for my 02 sensor broke off, what I have left is a single green wire (coaxial) type.

The 02 sensor on the car has a single black wire, so I don't understand where the single black wire plugs into?

Does the single green coaxial wire have a positive side as well as a negative ?

I am lost on this one!

Thanks in advance.
George

George,

It sounds like you have a single plug O2 sensor, as you should for your SC. The body of the sensor grounds to the cat. The single wire comes up through the engine sheet metal and plugs into the O2 port on the left side of the engine compartment, under the fuel filter and accumulator.

Hope this helps.

Hey Charlie, the problem is the 02 port (plug) is missing and the lead wire is where the problem comes in.
It's green and is a coaxial, so I don't know what side of the wire is used?

Thanks.

Ah, understand now. I dont think it's a coax wire, its probably just a shielded wire that has to run from inside the cabin back to the engine compartment. It carrys a very small voltage between 0 and 1V so the shielding may be used for interference purposes. I don't see why the green wire needs to be a coax....the end connector only has a plug for a single input.

You can probably get away with installing male/female bullet style crimp connectors on the green and O2 sensor wires and be done with it.

Charlie,

The wire has two conduits, do you know what the volt reading should be for the 02?

If you could send me your Email, I can send you a picture I just took.

Thanks for all your help.

George,

See thread:

Dan apparently had the same issue. You are correct, it does, looks, and acts like a coax.

BTW: The narrow band O2 sensors send a voltage between 0-1 volts to the lambda brain.

Bingo! Charlie,

I did a search on Pelican before I posted, but I could not come up with it.

I really appreciate all your help with this!

Thanks again.

George,

You can see that the narrow band O2 sensors are pretty much an on-off switch, where >.8 V means the mix is rich and <.2 the mix is a bit lean. Anything between means its pretty close to stoich (14.7:1 AFR). I dont know at what voltage the lambda brain will trigger an output to the frequency valve to adjst the mix, but you get the idea.
