I realize all would love to have a lift in the garage. What type is the concensus? 4 post, for storage? Or 2 post, for ease of tire removal?

2 post works for storage too. Asymmetrical makes getting the doors open easier. Prices vary but top-of-line, 9K lbs commercial lifts run less that $3,500 installed. Don’t forget to plan on reinforcing your floor, most residence garage floors don’t meet minimum thicknesses, so plan & shop accordingly.
I’ve actually been thinking about getting another lift for outside the garage. And no I don’t care what the neighbors think, they lost their whining rights when they told me no tall fence, then planted bamboo across the back of their property. I really hate bamboo

If you are on a budget, do some research on mid-rise lifts. Search the pelican archives, there is a lot good info on lifts there as well.

For the budget minded Bend Pack makes a 9000 lb 2 post for $2400 shiped to your door. It requires 4 inch concrete which is standard for most slabs. It will fit under a 9.5 celing but has a strip that runs across the floor. At first I though it would be a bit of a nusance but it has not proven to be so. I was able to install mine in a short day by myself but it would have been far better to have two people. I plan to make a set of long ramps that can be set in the lift arms to make the 2 post work like a 4 post. This way you can drive the car right up onto the lift and it will be sitting on the tires when elevated making it work as a 4 post type. Best of both!

4 post are better for storage than work. Some 4 post do not need to be installed at all just assemble and plug in. To work on wheels, brakes or things on the suspention you will still need to jack the car up but you can do this on the lift then move the lift up to a comfortable working level.

Hello Mr. Bamboo meet Mr. Roundup. It works OK. Bamboo is just realy big grass and is related to the green stuff in your yard. (but not in my yard, the weeds won) Bamboo spreads by sending out shoots that sprout. Kill the shoots and it just sends more. Best way to stop it is to hammer or bury some 12 inch wide sheet steel down in the ground to make a block and then kill the stuff on your side. Or get some Velpar and kill it all. Velpar is real nasty to anything that is plant like and once aplied will kill anything from weeds to 100 foot trees. This one might not go over very well with the owner of the Boo.

I have been debating this myself. I knew that if I waited long enough McGyver (I mean Kurt) would figure something out. Maybe you can patent these "long ramps"

Quick fix was to extend the cement I mean concrete ( black talon) parking pad an extra 15 feet to cover the entire property line. If it grows under the 12 foot wide strip I’m getting some agent orange... they’re still breading

Did you all see that thing in the Post about Fairfax County no longer allowing variances? Good thing you all have your big garages built already. This poor dude was dying of cancer and wanted to build a second bay to work on his Mustangs. Even the neighbors OKed it. He said they probably wouldn't grant the variance before he died.

Actually, we were denied a variance by Fairfax too. Something about a car hobby not being sufficient for granting a variance. We even had all the neighbors sign a petition saying they preferred the other setup. That explains the odd placement & size limitation. What we have was the only alternative that “fit” our lot & met code. We did get the 2nd driveway in just 1 week before they shut that down too. Just for clarification, the salaried employees of Fairfax Co. bent over backwards to help, even to the point of reinterpreting the property lines. It’s the political appointees that $@#*

Have to keep the constituents happy! Funny, I take issue with paving a front yard for parking... but paving the back yard, I'm down with that!

I was only able to talk the wife into letting me pave half the back yard and was happy as could be with the much reduced lawn mowing. Then winter came, it snowed and I discovered that mowing is less work than shoveling.
