I just recharged my 993's AC (it had never been done, but was still almost full) and now my AC is really awesome. 41 degree vent temps.
I've sat in mid-90 degree traffic jams in my car, and I've found that the needle climbs to the 9 o'clock position and then the fan comes on full speed and keeps it from going beyond that. That's still too hot IMHO and one of the first (and only) serious mods I'm going to do is install a second cooler on the left side. You can do this yourself for $400 and a day's labor. Totally worth it to me, to never have to think about oil temps again, in traffic jams or on the track. |

I'll add that if you just want a solid daily driver and basically have little preference between the 964 and 993, get a good 964. You'll find them for a LOT cheaper than the 993's. And they seem to be cheaper to maintain. A friend who runs a local European sales/service place just took an '89 964 on trade. 32K original miles, black on tan coupe, literally looks showroom new. He's only asking $24k for it. That seems typical for 964's. A 993 in that condition/mileage would be $37K.

Noah - Do you still have your silver car? Also, when did you pick up a 993? [/off topic]

Noah,
What is the name of your buddies store with the 964 for sale? I might give him a call. Agreed with Steve. I don't see many C2's for sale but it does appear that the pricing on the 964's is in the 18k to 25k range.

I cannot tell you about temperature in traffic because we have not here are some of the issues I considered when we were looking. I am not hung up on LH/SH debate like some Porschefiles and we wanted something of DD. We both loved the look of either 964 and 993 looking at them parked side by side, but decided that could not buy a nice 993 for what we were willing to spend.
The 993 is a little more comfortable driver based on the changes to the rear suspension. It also feel more of a cruiser. If the early 911 feel is important, then 964 is closer to that feel. I think that the A/C improved a little more in 993, but it is still on an oil cooled car. The 993 prices have not bottomed yet. There is that myth of lat of the air cooled, so people ask top $$ for a low mile car. I see low milage 95 993 (40-60K) for $33-37K. I would not be very quick to dismiss CEL issues even if you do not have emmision. You will have a hard time selling a 993 with CEL without showing it was properly taken care of. Could cost $$, but decent OBDII cars would be more in the $40K range. FWIW, we bought a 93 964 with less than 60K miles on it for less than $25K, after looking for about a year. I would not shy away from high mile 964s if there is full record to show car was takn care of. Low milage cars are probably more likely to have annoying leaks. For $25-30K, you can buy a 92-94 964 with less than 60K miles. they have the upgraded rear caliper and I think all (less sure about 92) used R134 for A/C, so no conversion $$ required. BTW, if driving the car in traffic on hot days is a concern, I would consider adding another oil cooler as a safety to either. It can be done fairly cheap. |

Chek out Autotrader or Cars.com. BTW, I would consider a nice C4, especially a 964 WB.

the 89 964s were only C4s. At 32K miles, I would check to see if cylinder/head oil seepage issues were addressed. The plus side, 89 had single FW instead of DFW. They also did not have airbags.

I had an 89 C4 (75K mi) and 97 993 Targa(91K mi)
-the 964 ride was better than the 993. the 964 was heavier and 'felt' lower and wider even tho it was not -the 964 had more complexity and more to maintain - traction control system and sensors, AWD alignments, etc -the 97 993 had less overall maintenance issues. spent more money maintaining the 964 - A/C was never great in either, and the glass roof system in the 993 contributed to higher heat buildup inside the cabin -never overheated but monitoring the engine temp in constant stop and go traffic/traffic jams was always a concern in both cars -sold the 964, kept the 993 -no longer use the 993 as DD, but for road trips I'd buy the latest model 964 you could afford |

The only thing I notice when it gets stinking hot out and I'm stuck in traffic is the LWF-induced transmission noise, but that's to be expected.
