Default Smart Tag/EZ Pass with Trailer

Just a quick question:

When I am towing a trailer, will the sensors at the "EZ-Pass only" lane automatically charge me the right amount? Or do I have to go through the cash line?

Can't wait to head up to the Glen!

Thanks,
Toby

No, charge is based on what's precoded on the "pass." We have one for and one without trailer. On the rare occation that I forget to change no alarm goes off or anything like that

Toby,

I asked a year or so ago and was told, it figures out that three axles pass through. I sailed through the EZ only lane last year without a problem.

Some luck lies not in getting what you thought you wanted but getting what you have, which once you have got it you may be smart enough to see is what you would have wanted had you known.

When we did ours we were told just the opposite. Had to have one for trailer and one for no-trailer. I like your "story" better since our quarterly statement supports the "need two." Have to do some more research this weekend

This is according to the FAQ from Maryland EZ Pass website
(http://www.ezpassmd.com/static/faq/index.shtml#eighteen):

Can I use my E-ZPass transponder while towing a camper or trailer?
Yes. However, you will be charged the full fare rate for the actual number of axles.

I've been using my standard EZ Pass without any problems, although I've noticed that it sometimes it charges for the 3rd axle, and sometimes not. Works for me...

bingo. It automatically detects number of axles and charges you appropriately (you pay more when the trailer is attached).

Given we have a 4th axle also, this definitely works for me

It doesn't look like VA's smart-tag does it automatically.

Might be best to get two so the trip to VIR is simpler on the powhite. Shame you just can't get one for the truck and another for the trailer.

I have an eazy pass on my trailer attached to the front cross bar; so there are two passes going thru each time.
