I worked in Como for two years 1998-99 and when I returned I bought my first Porsche. We lived in San Fermo della Battaglia, just to the west of Como. Here's the Google Earth location of the converted monastery

Spectacular pictures. It makes me yearn to go back now. i spent my summers visiting my grandparents and cousins in Sarzana, La spezia on the Italian Riviera. Sometimes I take for granted how lucky I am to have family over there. Haven't been back for the last 2 years but now i think it's time. Thanks.

Very nice photos.......Sure doesn't look the same as it did when I was there in 1958..(U S Navy Med cruise)... I am sure the prices have gone up.....

Okay guys, this is probably my last upload from Rome since I am flying back tomorrow morning and tonight I am just chilling out with my Italian friends. I think you'll like these pictures from my walk early this morning -- I had a great time taking pictures since hardly anyone else was up that early.

I started off at the Trevi Fountain which is about 2 minutes walk from my hotel. The legend goes that if you throw a coin over your shoulder into the fountain that you'll be granted your wish of coming back to Rome in the future.


I then headed towards the Pantheon -- the world's oldest functioning building. It is also conveniently located in front of a McDonald's.


After firing off a few shots of the Pantheon I headed to Piazza Navona. I was disappointed to discover the main fountain covered in scaffolding and undergoing maintenance. The fountain of Neptune still looked good though.


Finally, before heading back to the hotel I stopped at a cafe by the Pantheon to have a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. I am glad I did because I was able to capture a great shot -- my favorite of the day.

Bill, how was the Mille Miglia? I didn't know that was going on. I would've tried to watch it. It was Ducati Day in Lake Como when I visited. Lots of bikes and quite a few Ferraris were parked along the lake. And of course the single 959 that crashed the party.

Funny thing was that we were on our way toward Montalcino and we happened along a group of 8 Mclaren SLRs parked at a hotel right off the road. I of course stopped to shoot some photos and talk to the tech who was working on them and asked what was the deal. They had 18 cars running at the Mille Miglia and it was the third and final day of the run. We had no idea! About 15 minutes down the road, i saw a cop with his lights on and pulled over a little. Behind the cop was a 50s or 60s two seater I cannot identify yet (maybe the pics will help someone else here figure it out) that passed us nicely and which we followed for a while. We were actually on the route!! When we got to the next town we were diverted off the course but drove parrallel to it for a while and saw some vintage ferraris (one red open race car and a silver coupe) running through the countryside. It was really amazing. Saw a two dark green 911's as well, one coupe and one targa. One roadside stop watching had a gullwing parked there. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip.

Oh Europe, what a place! Anyway, great shots and a little jealous at the same time. However, I miss being there specially in Germany. Glad you enjoy the trip guys!
