There's an interesting thread on Pelican now about opening a DIY garage and renting out the lift spaces. It seems pretty unanimous that insurance would be cost-prohibitive. But a few guys chimed in about how some got togther and did actually rent some commercial garage space, got a lift and made sort of a club thing out of it. Ths would be the answer to all my prayers. David Riley just a got a lift for his new garage. But he already has 6 Porsches and I know he'll always be using his lift. Marc's Garage & Grill, while the birthplace of our clique, is just not made to house a lift. Anyone give any thought to renting out some warehouse space or maybe something along those lines? I'd be there all the time and would happily chip in for it. I'd supply the fridge and it would always be well-stocked with Pabst.

Seriously Rick, I like the idea of (somebody else) setting up a commercial DIY garage, but I think your concept, great in theory, would have a lot of practical problems. I've seen a lot of friendships end over these great sounding joint ventures. Some guys in the club think other guys are not pulling their weight, or are taking more than their share of the benefits, or are taking things home and are not bringing them back, etc., etc. I don't have a lift, but my garage is open to anybody on this board any time (well, wrap it up by midnight), no strings attached, and we certainly know just about everybody on the board feels the same way. And another thing: you're a great guy and I value your friendship, but as a married guy with kids I can't be hanging around the clubhouse all the time with my Porsche buddies. I have no idea if a commercial setup would be a viable business, but I would patronize that type of place. Frankly, if you owned something like that I would have no problem paying for my time there, even though you're my friend, because it's your business, not a charity. Of course, I'm speaking only for myself, and some of the guys might want to try it. If so, I'd be happy to help out with the legal hurdles, but I can't see myself joining.

Hey, if you all want to buy me a lift you can use it any time. I'd even chip in. I can draft a liability release that will make your eyes hurt. You may need to squat a little since the ceiling is only 10'.

Seriously, it is a neat and interesting idea but with two young boys at home I'd have limited time to participate. If you single guys pull this off maybe you can have a "family man" night so those of us with a wife and kids could come over and play sometime.

Just got the go ahead to build the backyard shop. 32X24 with 10 foot walls and a attic. And....a lift! Right in my own back yard, in fact it will be a good amount of it. fine with me less grass to mow. No more crawling under getting dirt in my eyes and working in the rain. The little woman is cool with and in fact is funding it with some of the windfall from selling her townhouse. Now thats a keeper!
I will post details as the work moves along and don't worry Doug, if all goes well it looks like I will be a family man in Oct, so you are welcome too.

Wow Kurt, that is two big news stories from the home front. Congratulations to you on both counts. Which are you more excited about?

I can see the cars lining up for work in your new shop now, just like they do by your trailer in the paddock at SP. You can make them pay in child care duty.
