21st Annual Deutsche Marque Concours - RESCHEDULED
Saturday, July 17, 2004 Rain Date: Sunday, July 18 Time: 8:30 am - 4:00 pm Location - Avenel Golf and Country Club in Potomac, Maryland Register Online The Deutsche Marque Clubs and TPC at Avenel have come to an agreement on the new date. The 21st Annual Deutsche Marque Concours will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2004 --- same venue, details, and times apply from the original date. In the event that the 17th of July is also rained out, July 18, 2004 has also been reserved as the "rain date." If you had a schedule conflict back in May, this is your chance to attend the event and witness the best cars in the region. We are giving out top notch trophies for all classes and a Best of Marque trophy based on highest overall points. As a Deutsche Marque Concours tradition, this will be a "top only" concours that is co-sponsored with our fellow Deutsche Marque car clubs - BMW Car Club of America (BMWCCA) and the Mercedes-Benz Club of America (MBCA). The cars will be judged by their condition, appearance, and cleanliness. This event will offer two classes; top-only (judged) and display (People's Choice). "Top-only" is where the exterior, interior, bonnet, and engine bay are judged. The "display" class involves regular spectators to vote by a "peoples' choice" ballot to determine the winner. Trophies will be awarded to the winners and merchandise will be available for purchase. A wine and cheese reception will follow the car show. The final number of concours classes will be adjusted based on registration, but we will consider these classes: 356 class 914 class Early model 911 class Late model 911 class Early model water cooled class Late model water cooled class Boxster class Cayenne class Even if you do not show your Porsche, come out and enjoy the day with fellow enthusiasts. Friends and family are most welcome. Event Schedule: 8:30am Grounds open to show participants for placement onto the field. 9:00am General admission to the public begins. 10:30am Judging begins. Cars not in place and on the field by 11:00am will not be allowed to show. 3:00pm Scores are tallied. 3:30pm Wine and Cheese Reception - Awards will be given at the reception. Please note: This concours is an all day event. Resources are spent in preparation prior to the show, as well as on the day of the event, by both event planners and participants. If you enter the event, please be prepared to stay through the awards ceremony. If your vehicle places in its class and you and the vehicle have departed, the trophy will be awarded to the next runner-up in class. Additionally, please be mindful that cars not registered and displayed in the show should not be parked in the show field. Registration: The entry fee is $25.00 per car if pre-registered by April 23, 2004, or $30.00 per car if registered after after April 23 or on the day of the show. Registration includes one Wine & Cheese Reception ticket; additional tickets are available for $10.00 each. There is no charge to attend the event as a spectator. For pre-registration, please register online. You will need your PCA member number, name, phone number, email address and the year and model of your car. Please specify class type of your car, Concours (judged) or Display (People's Choice). After you complete the online registration send a check payable to Potomac PCA to: Potomac PCA c/o Jon Estrella 43210 Parkers Ridge Drive Leesburg VA, 20176 Please contact Jon Estrella (703) 443-1004 or concours@pcapotomac.org for more details.

I guess it's that time to dust off the ascot
Jon, I have one comment. With the display class, they generally only give out one 1st place award going to the car with the most votes of all the classes. The problem with this was the car that generally won was either the only car in its category or one of two in it's category. Obviously impossible for a 911 to win 1st place when a sole boxster shows up. Not sure what the solution is but was curious if the judging was going to be the same this year. All in all, we really enjoy this event and look forward to going! -Dan |

Jon,
I have never been to a PCA Concours, or entered my cars in one. But I'm thinking of entering an '89 I have (tried several times to get you the pics...). Are cars generally driven to this event or is it a bubblewrap trailor show with people jacking up tires aligning crests, ...etc? Not sure I could handle the latter... Thanks for the update. Will go regardless, undecided on entry. Keith

keith, I was about to send you a PM since I remembered your car and how clean it was. I remembered seeing a picture but could not remember from who until recently when I saw your icon. Yes, people will drive their cars there. This is a top only concours and no checking underneath. There are two classes. I believe on the full concours, the engine bay will be judged as well. No need to worry about how immaculate the car is since this is not Pebble Beach and majority of the cars are either driven everyday or as second weekend cars.
Dan, thanks for pointing that out. Since I'm responsible for awards on this event I would like to hear some feedback and opinions on the display class awards. I agree with you on this and should be changed a bit. PM me directly and we can talk more about how to make it more interesting.

Jon,
I saw some pictures of the Concours at PCA Parade and it looked pretty intense. This event sounds a little more my pace. I'll try and enter it in the Top Only portion just to see what happens, and get some suggestions from the judges on improvements. Thanks for the reply. Keith

Keith,
This concours event is the toughest one of the season but still is relatively low-key compared with other clubs. The biggest thing is to clean in places that you can't see. Reach behind wheel spokes, inside the exhaust pipe, sun visors, engine parts you can't see, etc. For the older cars, they do look for more with fit and finish of items. The toughest thing for me is going up against other 30+ yr old cars where they've replaced parts and they are very shiny compared to my original parts...oh well. It's really something you should experience at least once. I'm probably going for the people's choice only because I really don't anticipate having the time to clean up the old ride to the level needed. -Dan |

I think everyone should also understand that this for the fun for all car enthusiast. Its about going out there meeting new people and enjoy the day. To me, entering this type of events as paying to park in a good spot. It beats a parking lot anyday.

Keith:
Bring your tub and "someone" will find a way to "manipulate" the tally I've been to this the past few years and the BMW and Mercedes guys really turn out in force. This year should be more interesting with Audi joining the mix. There was a beautiful ('58 ?) speedster there last year. Absolutely gorgeous! For BMWs: there are some beautiful 3.0Csi, 2800, Bavaria, and 2002s at the show. Several with upgraded engine transplants. Almost makes me want to polish up the iX and see how our brethren from Munchen are doing. Jase |

Since the 911 T/E engine project stubbornly refuses to assemble itself I'll have to bring the other German. Look for a slightly scruffy silver '72 3.0 coupe. Come over and encourage me. I told my 11-year-old that the 911 would be running by the time she enters middle school, which is next fall. She is skeptical.
