Well I was just looking at the Der Vorganger and there is still that 300HP 3.6 with a 915 car for sale, it's only ~$36k I think, comes with an open trailer etc. No way you could build the car for that...

Bill,
Weber 40s will fit up to a 3.2 for the street. You'd really want 46s if the motors are in race trim. Carbs are about $1k if in good shape (too expensive to rebuild, so get ones in good shape - want mine?. Add manifolds, K&Ns, and linkage. All avail new from PMO, but cheaper if you can find the right ones used.

Note: PMO has proper manifolds that both cover up the CIS/EFI slot in the head (prevents the gasket from leaking) and they are tapered to the port size you specify. So, unless you want to mod & port a factory tall manifold ($$$), the PMO ones aren't a bad deal. BTW, I think TWM sells ones too - for less, but I've never seen one.

The harder part is finding the /6 linkage. The /6 had an intermediate plate w/ a hole for the bellcrank. Apparently the early /4s shared it. A later side shift tranny will not have the hole. There are some pretty simple looking brackets people have made - not hard to DIY. Or, you can buy one of the aftermarket billet 901 intermediate plates - they all have the hole. A factory bellcrank and throttle rod setup once you get the hole figured out are $1-200.

For lots of eye candy and the potential expenses of a well done (maybe too well done?) -6 conversion, check these guys out. You can at least use it as aguide to things you may need along the way.

And if not already mentioned, www.914club.com is another great 914 resource!

This was an easy DIY with either a custom linkage attachment point to the manifold (ala Kurt Mickelwait) or Rich Johnson out of texas makes a nice kit ($130). Requires you drill into a boss on the side of the case (any side shift), insert a longer stud in another spot and bolt on the bell crank. Heck, if I can do it...

"A nice 1800 lb 914 with 180 hp and slicks sure sounds like fun "

Even more fun is a 1980 lb 914 with 250hp and a bone stock, chipped motor. Power, handling and most of all dependability.

I have never driven ANY 914 that wasn't a ton of fun. That's why I bought its direct descendant.

Betty, how about some details on your car.
I'm a long way from moving on anything, but very intrested in looking at all the options. Yours is probably not the best value for me because I already have engines and 911 brakes and suspension.
One engine is the 3.6 from Eli's car. I assume from the "bone stock 250hp" comment, that is what you are running. Besides the engine, what other things need to be upgraded to get it into the car?
Pictures would be great in this Thread!

i would not be so sure on the "not the best value to you" part. Her car is ready to go and $orted. This will put you on the track behind a wheel rather than under a car trying to reinvent the wheel. You can sell off the stuff you have to recoup it's value. Its value is null unless you use it and to use it is not without cost overall. Example is getting a gearbox that would, bolt up and put up with the 3.6. you don't have a suspention. You have some of the raw parts needed to make one for a 914. I might bet that you would end up shelling out in time and $ more to make your pile of stuff into a 914 than purchasing a sorted track prepped 6 cyl 914.

Your question might not be one of $ as the stuff you have will cost to use and can be sold but of what you want to do. Wrench or drive?
