Default Roll Cages and Inspections

As I have mentioned in past posts, I am buying a NA 944. My car has a full roll cage welded into it, and someone just told me that they seriously doubt that the car will pass DC inspection with a full cage.

That is a shame, because I would like to have the option to drive the car to and from the gas station and perhaps to nearby tracks like Summit Point.

Has anyone been able to get a car with a full cage through inspection?

How about in DC? Also, would an '83 qualify as an historic car in VA? Would that help?

Any hints, apart from give it up and buy a truck and trailer?

Why would it fail? What are the legal reasons for failing? Have you checked the DC DMV yet or are you going by hearsay. I've had street legal (and registered) cars in NJ and Ma with full roll cages and it wasn't a problem.

You can use my address and register it in VA. I know a shop that will pass it just because it's a Porsche.

IMO NASCAR bars in doors hinder getting in and out. First ask a DC inspection station manager, then if yes, have Stan reconfigure the bars as removable. Since the bar is to keep an object out of the drivers lap, have half round fittings welded to the bar and then bolt the bar back in place. Or just cut it out for inspection then re-weld afterwards. You don’t need the bars for DE so until you go for your comp license just leave then out.

I have decided to avoid DC altogether by co-titling the car with my brother-in-law, who lives in VA.

RL, please PM me the inspector who you think will pass it no problem, or perhaps we could go there together once I am ready to get it inspected.

DC is too risky since you only have one inspection location. VA is better because I theoretically could keep trying different inspectors until I succeed. Too bad I don't qualify for antique tags yet ('84).

If you can, please pass along the info on the inspector. I know I'm going to have some problems with my car, assuming I ever get it running. It would be nice to have a friendly inspector to take the car to.

many thanks,

Well, I don't know if he can help you if the car ain't running. But.... his name is Sami and he looks like D'Artange from the Three Muskateers. He owns a Shell station on Franconia Rd. across from the 7-11, near the intersection with Beulah St. Sami has a sweeeeet zenith blue 993 C2S and is always looking for P-car friends to chat with. I can't get away when I run into him at the 7-11. He can also get next day parts deliveries from World Pak and will hook P-car owners up. Go find the station first and and ask when he's working next. Then take your car in when he's there. Last time I went there for inspeciton, I had parking lamp go out and he gave me the bulb and let me replace it right there in the garage.

Rick, do restaurants let you go in the back and cook your own food as well. You are the king of DIY

That reminds me of a time when my clutch cable snapped on the beater motorcycle I had in Germany. I limped to a shop and the guy said he didn't have time to deal with it, but I was welcome to use his shop and tools. When I was done, I asked if I could pay him. He told me to go across the street and grab a few .5l bottles of Frueh Koelsch for him and his crew. That was the best bill I ever paid.

After seeing the pictures from his last trip the restaurants RL frequents don’t mind if he brings in his own food to prepare (on a lease)
