Who do you use for insurance on your older Porsches. State Farm is killing me. I looked at Hagerty prices seemed very good but not sure about services or what happens when you put a claim in. Anybody got some ideas- Pros and cons on anyother insurers. Thanks

Ask your State Farm agent about special interest/collector car insurance. My SF rate is fantastic.

I also have a State Farm "collector car" policy on my '84 Carrera; it is less that Leland-West's premiums. The main restriction is I can not use the car for business activities; no annual mileage limit and a stated value for loss purposes. My annual premium is approx. $250.

Regards, Bruce

If you have served in the military, are married to someone who has, or join while still a dependant of a parent who is already a member, USAA has very competitive rates and their service is fantastic. My annual premiums on my Carrera are just under $400.00, but I am 26 and have some speeding tickets on my record. Plus, you always get some (not much, but it is nice) money back at the end of your bi-annual contract assuming you have not had a claim.

I looked into Haggerty, their rates for me were about the same as USAA and they won't insure you if anyone in your household has had even one ticket in the past 5 years (at least for new policies). Remember, what they quote you over the phone or on the net is a quote. You have to have their underwriters look into you to get a final price (true of all insurers).

I looked at a bunch of companies but got killed on the mileage restrictions - usually 2500 per year. I like to put at least 5,000/yr on my SC. Also, the "driving to and from shows" doesn't seem to excuse the occasional trip to work or even to Giant.

I will also say that having moved to VA from NJ my premiums dropped from about 2k/yr for the 911, to about the same (in total) for all 3 of the cars in the house.

I have SF for my car as well, but be warned that their "Stated Value" policy does not pay out the Stated Value in the event of a total loss; it's not an "Agreed Value" policy. It will still be up to you to prove to them that the car was actually worth the stated value, all you are paying for is a policy that "could" pay out the stated value.

Scott had this problem with SF after he had an accident with his 914 a few years ago. After hearing his story I talked to my agent who confirmed that I pay premiums for a "Stated Value" policy worth $XX,XXX, but in the event of an accident I will receive fair market value up to $XX,XXX. Then he encouraged me to have the car professionally appraised and send them a copy of the appraisal.

I know most people in this hobby are familiar with "Agreed" vs. "Stated" policies, but when I purchased my Stated Value policy my agent assured me I would receive the stated value incase of a total loss. It wasn't until I started pushing the subject that he changed his tune, and started telling the truth.....

I'm still with SF because I don't like the restrictions of the Agreed policy companies.

Where can one get this done and does it cost much?

You could probably look in the phone book or even ask your insurance agent if there is someone they use for such a purpose.

I had it done for my SC once. After taking the pictures and some notes the guy looked at me and asked how much I think its worth. I gave him the number. Done deal. Not too much research or validation to "my value". Maybe your experience will differ.

Paul

I did go with Hagerty, it was easy and my premiuim with them was about $260 lower than Erie. I couldn't understand it considering all 3 of my other cars + my home owners insurance is with them but Hagerty's quotes are very realistic.
