Default First spark plug change this evening, do I have it right?

84 Carrera 3.2

I'll be disconecting AC compresser.

Bought Bosch Platinum but further reading tells me to go back to Advance and get Coppers?

Don't tap set with feeler gauge in the plug. (028?)

I don't have the tool kit tool. Will be using 13/16 swivel foot socket, 3/8 drive, 6" extension. Extension taped to socket. Will see if the nieghbor has a 4" extension.

Finger tight then (no torque wrench) tighten untill I fel washer crush? Apparently this is an aquired skill. Hope I get it right. I may try using a piece of fuel line attached to the plug to get initial line up.

A little metel nipple type adapter came with each plug, will I be using this or discarding?

Searching this subject was very helpful, Just want to make sure all my bases are covered as this is my first plug change ever

Hey there ... what's your name?

It isn't that difficult. You'll feel the initial resistance once you finger tighten it down to where the washer is touching. You won't have that many turns (possibly less than one) after you reach that point to "crush" the washer.

The little nubs that "screw" on to the end of the plug usually have an indentation where the plug holder (on the wire loom) clips over. Some plug holders don't use this screw on end and simply clip over the exposed threads on the plug. See what is on the old plugs and replicate on new ones. In this picture of a Bosch super plug ... the nub is copper colored.

While you are in there ... put an Ohm (preferably digital) meter on the wires and check their resistance. Specs are in little spec book or Bentley's manual. Good time to swap out if out of spec. Make sure not to mix up plug wires to correct cylinders when you re-attach.

Spec book for SC:

Good luck and post some pics here of your car!! as well as any Qs you have as you do the job.

Yes, a name would be good.

When you say disconnect the AC compressor, you're just thinking about unbolting it from its base, right? You don't need to (or want to) disconnect the lines carry refrigerant. Place multiple thick towels or blankets on your right fender so you can lay the compressor nicely on top of them. Don't want dents or paint damage.

I hope it goes smoothly for you.

You don't need to remove compressor (why create more work ?). Use a 13/16 swivel plug socket as you mentioned; get from napa a locking 3/8 drive extension (3 inch). This will keep socket from sticking to plug when you are pulling tool out of hole. You will be able to work this tool in plug hole behind compressor.

Is there really that much access with the AC compressor there, Matt?

Agreed. I did it on mine over the summer w/o removing the a/c. The bitch of this you keep hooking your gloves on the a/c lines. Small(er) price to pay for not taking it out.

I would go to sears and get an appropriate spark plug tool (I can't tell from your post if you do). If the plug slips out, you will be taking out the a/c!

I think 4to8m8 is "motion's" brother in VA Beach. Do I have that right?

Thanx for the input. I'll find a 4" extension, use some high temp anti seize, go back for the copper plugs, attach the nipple adapters, and try it with the compressor intact. This DIY stuff is awsome.

VA Steve- You are correct. Motion is my Brother.
