Well damn..I took off to back wheels to start the bushing replacement and both sides of the axles have the outer boots are torn . I see the replacement are very pricey..any suggestions on where to buy new ones or is there a way to fix just the boots...

1/2 shaft rebuilds are basic diy when you follow a few simple methods. The boots are cheap.

You are right. Forgot the cut off point for then was 84 was thinking it was the g50 and later. You can fix the non stub axle side only. Stupid thing too. Boots fail long before the rest does.

So there are two different types of axles:
- Ones with M8 bolts on both inner and outer CVs. These have a detachable stub axle and both the inner and outer CVs are removable/rebuildable (911-332-033-09): ![]() - Ones with M10 bolts on the inner CV only. These have an integrated stub axle and only the inner CV is removable/rebuildable (911-332-024-15): ![]() The change over for these in is 1985.... somewhere. Some 85s have the old M8 ones, some have the newer M10 ones. You won't know what you have unless you look. My car is an 02/85 build and had the older ones. Even if you have the newer M10 axles you can replace the outer boot by pulling the axle, then removing the inner CV to R&R the outer boot.

Yeah mine has the shaft style..what will it hurt to run with the boot broken..besides the grease coming out? It's been like this for 6 years now. Hate to spend all that money if I can get a few more miles out of them..
I was hoping to them when I had to drop the motor |

i think you answered your own question...think of it this way...what would it hurt running the engine with low oil and lots of leaks...same risk to me...if it has really been that long, i would get in there and replace the boots...the kits aren't that expensive...and the effort to rebuild is simple...

I removed and rebuilt my shafts on my 1988 911 in one day. Cleaning out that old grease was probably 75% of the effort. It's really not that bad if you are swapping in new parts. Prices have gone up though as new shafts were around $325 back when I considered out right replacement.
