Default Ted's rebuild update

Well it's all the way down to the case. Tomorrw I pull the head studs. I only had one snag durring the teardown. I rounded off the inside of two of the head stud barrel nuts. No biggie, they came right out with a Snap-on easy-out bit.
I found there was serious blow-by on the #4 head as well as the #6 head, #4 being the worst of the two. I also found a broken top ring on the #4 piston. The #4 head only looks off color with some carbon buildup on the outside of the sealing surface, no pitting or charing. I'm hoping it can be machined so I can keep it. Otherwise I'll go 3.4. Tear down was fairly straight forward. Now comes the painstaking wait for the machine shop.Thank again to all who lent a hand. I'll post pictures in the morning.

Might as well do the bottom end. If everything is in good shape it wouldn't hurt just to put in some fresh bearings and seals. That's only $200-$300 from this point and really not much more work. It will give you something to do while your waiting for the machine work.

Better measure your piston ring groves. Any ideas on what caused the ring to break? Mine was #4 to ring as well. I bet that is the majority of the reason for the bad leakdown and the cylinder head leak was not that bad. Did #6 show low numbers on the leakdown.

Check out the Alusil thread on Pelican. I just got some new info from KS about their cylinders and prepairing them for re-ringing. In fact one guy is offering to do it for free as a test case. You can't beat having it done for NADDA Zip nothing.

Default update update

Preliminary inspection reveals all mating surfaces are good enough to keep what I've got. The heads will be fly cut and the cylinders honed. I am going with a hotter cam as well as stiffer valve springs.
Bill,
I'm not going to split the case because I don't have any leaks and the motor has only 75K on it. I think the ring broke because of the heat from the extra o2 cause by the leak ( just a guess). I will be doing rod bearings as well as upgraded rod bolts. The heads and cylinders are at the machine shop as of this afternoon. I'm pulling the head studs and doing some clean-up on the case tonight.
I might just have this thing up and running in lesss than a month.

Ted,

Thats great news!!

So the heads were damaged from slapping against the C's and can be repaired, good news. How is the 'sealing ring' on the cylinder tops repaired, or were they not damaged?

Were the heads visibly damaged, or was some type of precise measuring tool needed? How about the cylinder tops.

I'm 3.2 challenged and just curious.......

What machine shop are you using??? Inquiring minds want to know.

Great luck on the Heads and P&Cs.

Nice pics Ted. Especially like the "bluing" of the #4 jug on the left edge. Should be perty pretty when you get them back.

Good job.
