Flemings Ulitmate Garage in Rockville has a 1985 928 (23,000 original miles) for sale, it is a local car. I was wondering if anyone on here has any knowledge of this car, i.e. owner, history? They are asking $22,000 for it, seems a bit high, but it is in great conditions (from the outside). Just looking for any information on this car that someone might have.
Thanks

Seems steep but not if they have complete service history and documentation.
For that amount of $ an independant PPI should be done. I would also ask for the 'carfax', maintanence receipts, service history, and any deferred maintanence to be performed before pickup of the car. (Including timing belt, motor and transmission mounts, transmission filter service (if automatic), Thrust Bearing measurement, steering rack seals and things like fuel lines (they can rupture causing engine fire if they are original). Although it has 23k miles, it is an old car with rubber parts that will deteriorate. Good luck, 928s are awesome!

Are the wheels painted red?

No they are the original "phone dial" style wheels, the entire car is completely original.

They aren't actually "phone diels" on an '85. They are "trash can lids".
Looks nice. 32V motor (288hp) and a STICK is a rare combo. Certainly priced high. Hope recent timing belt/wp work is done. Do 928 clutches fail like 944 ones? My mom had an '84 928S (auto) for a bit. Great grand touring car. Didn't own it long enough to regret it * The joke about the red wheels was another fella out here had a red 928 with red wheels. Where is Old Tee these days? Under the MG?

Phone dials have big holes while trash can lids have narrow slots.

I don't know this car.
I just bought an 86.5 5 spd 928 with similar mileage and condition for slightly less than you are planning to offer for this one. Because the timing belt was 12 years old, I replaced it right away. New fuel lines are next, because fire kills more old 928s than anything else. If you can, come out to the 928 frenzy in Sterling on Saturday. There will be a ton of 928s there and a lot of people who know these cars inside out. There are also likely to be some for sale without the deferred maintenance that can make an initial purchase more costly than you would otherwise assume. Info on the event is here: http://www.928frenzy.org/ Getting a PPI is essential if you are paying a premium for "low miles." First, because broken odometers are the rule rather than the exception in 928's, you may not be getting what you think. Second, if the car has had the same coolant in it for 25 years, you run the risk of getting a block and heads that have been eaten away. Third, you need to get a handle on what is going to have to be replaced just because it is old. Make sure you get the date codes off the tires etc. |

They are the standard 928 wheels, generally called 'flat wheels', or sometimes 'manhole covers'. There are cast and forged variants.
Unless it is a museum piece, the car is extremely overpriced. But then, price on 928s is best measured by what it is worth to you, rather than what it might be worth on the open market now. There should be sticker under the rear carpet, pull the three digit codes and look them up to see whether there are any distinguishing characteristics. |
