Peter - why did you use isolation mounts on the oil cooler? You're supposed to hard mount that to the body you know.

Perhaps if you resumed your medications you'd understand why you believe that...

Andrew F and Bill M came over last night and we got a lot done on the electrical needs. Found the fuel pump problem - the wire had been plugged into the wrong fuse, and the top of that fuse was basically a bus connected to half the car... Bill stayed until 1:30 AM figuring out all the wiring needed to connect the DME to the trunk/fuses. Kaefer had removed the entire DME harness when he took the engine (to be expected), and Jazz, from whom I got the harness when I bought his engine, had left the wiring forward of the DME in his car (also what I would have done if it had been me).

Today, I got almost all correct color wires (can't find a black 16-gauge wire with a violet stripe for some reason), ran them through the correct hole and up the the fuse panel, and if a few minutes I'm going to go out and solder the new wires to the cut ones by the DME. Used the "I'm saving money doing this myself so I should buy a tool to do it" excuse to buy a good soldering gun, and will banish my old soldering irons to the basement...

I'm planning on mounting the DME vertically on the firewall behind the driver's seat. As I haven't actually done that yet, anyone have a strong opinion that I should mount it elsewhere? I was planning on putting bolts through the firewall pointing forward and with a tight nut holding the bolt in place (so it's like a stud), then putting neoprene washers between that nut and the DME unit for mild isolation from vibration.

Then I plan to mount the G2X either in the passenger-side rear seat (on a level board mounted to the seat) or on the center tunnel in front of the shifter (where I mounted it in the Targa).

Will post photos later. Thanks again to Andrew and Bill.

There is never a good excuse to buy a soldering gun. Soldering iron. You want a good soldering iron. If you really want something good it should be a Weller in a light blue color. Everything else is, well, crap.

I have 2 soldering irons (well, admittedly both are crap). Why not the gun, which heats up very fast. Is it control (too big and heavy) c/w the iron? It's still in the box, but planning on soldering tomorrow afternoon...

Using a soldering gun on wiring is like shooting groundhogs with a .50 caliber armor piercing round. Sure you'll get the wires soldered together, but you will melt the insulation for several inches up and down each wire, too. That will lead to future problems.

I'd suggest something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Weller-WESD51-Digital-Soldering-Station/dp/B000ARU9PO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1270990389&sr=1-3

Well...... I'd love to have one of those, but for car stuff I've done pretty good stuff with my gun for decades of typical wiring applications.

The guns heat (and cool) quickly which is great when you have just a few connections to do.

If I was going to spend all day at a bench, I'd want a good iron.

I use very THIN solder and melt just a tiny bit on the tip and then touch the wire to help transfer the heat. It only takes a few seconds to get the wire hot enough to get more solder to flow.

Just like a Tig, you can pulse the trigger to help control heat and mine has a little light on the end to help light up what your doing.
