There are quite a few members on this BB who purchased cars from other parts of the country. They relied heavily on the PPIs, and I don't think any who followed through with the purchase were disappointed.

Geoff at ASG is a top-notch mechanic; he is responsible for maintaining many DE and Club Race cars, and has also worked on Speed World Challenge cars. He knows what he is doing. And he is more than capable of providing the services 911Rules needs. And I am sure Matt de Maria is more than capable of doing this as well (although I have no personal experience with him, I have heard good things from others), and so are a handful of other local shops in the DC area.

Good post Kurt, I also feel 911rules got some uneccessarily uncivil replies. He has done a lot of his homework, and basically asked some simple questions that did not deserve a diatribe.Hope everything works out and you continue to make use of the many resources and good contributors this board has.

The shops mentioned by everyone else already are great and you can't go wrong having a full PPI done on a car before you plunk down cash. I've had Jeff at ASG perform three PPI's for me, two cars I purchased and loved, and the third I was in love with (an '87 930 - black), it was cosmetically perfect with only 47k miles, but it had serious engine issues, in short - they saved my ass. I saw the car for sale again three months later by it's new owner.

From here in Virginia, I've purchased cars in Maine and Georgia, arranging for my own PPI's there, and walked away from a few sellers who wouldn't allow PPI's done in shops they didn't frequent. So be it. I've never had a problem, though I've wondered sometimes if the car justified the PPI expense. In the end with several super reliable cars - I'd consider it a vital part of the Porsche purchase process.

Good luck.

Keith

911 Rules

Okay so its obvious we as a group might have wore you out a little. I still think what I think about the ride that you have chosen. If you have been looking for a year then I would encourage you to keep looking. You have my sincerest apologies. Kurt is right, you came to us looking for an opinion, eventhough you got what you were looking for, it was out of line for me to decide what was the right car for you. How am I or any of us better able to tell someone we don't even know the name of what is the best car for them. 911 rules you never know, the perfect car might be that one, or it may be waiting for you on the next web page that you look at or in this Sunday's classified of you local paper. Where ever your search takes you good luck.

Mike

Good thing I was not on this thread earlier. There has been some seriously bogus opinion spouting here, which is not typical of the Dorki community!

So, let me add a few words for 911Rules, OK?

- Buying a 911 from a distance has been a great success for many, many guys that I know and probably thousands that I don't know. Any suggestion otherwise is pure BS.

- When searching for my first 911, there were several 'long-distance' candidates. A combination of look-overs by local board members [the Pelican board] and PPIs warned me off most of these cars. Find the right shop and an honest PPI can save you from an expensive mistake.

- Contrary to what has been said in this thread [did I mention that there is some totally bogus opinion in some of these posts?] there were a least three cases where local NOVA shops could have ensured themselves of several thousand dollars of work by recommending that I buy a given car and then suggesting some repair work to make it 100%. In every case, these shops told me straight out that I was crazy to consider these cars, and the reasons why. I one early case where I was emotionally sold on the car before the PPI, Charlie Murphy at Intersport had to almost lierally beat some sense into me. I'm much smarter now.

- I bought my 911 in San Francisco. Got a great deal and never regretted it. Found a seller who was more than willing to work with me, and did the due diligence that any sensible buyer would do. Just what you are doing.

- I bought my 951 race car in Buffalo, NY. Same deal, only this time the car was sitting at a race prep shop during the transaction. The shop owner had prepared the car for the PO, but was highly recommended by several local Porsche guys who know a lot more about the 951 that I did. The guy was scrupulously honest, and both the PO and I felt that he treated us fairly throughout. The car was a great buy all round.

- Both PPI shops that have been mentioned in this thread are highly knowledgeable operators with great reputation. You would be in great hands with either choice. FWIW, I like Geoff Schultz's approach, which sounds like 'lets take a good overall look at the car, then decide if it is a good candidate to go on with. I like that approach, and I'm sure Matt would do the same.

Sounds like you have most of the info you came looking for in this thread. Its a shame that you had to deal with some the less than helpful stuff along the way.
The perps know who they are

Please keep us updated with progress on this buy, and be confident that buying a Porsche long distance can be easier with some help for the local PCar community. We are here, OK?

Well here's a update I received a email from the seller

"Frank,

I have been asked by my Uncle on yesterday to sell the car to him. He had
an interest in the 1981 I had, but it was already sold when I told him of my
plan. He plans on coming up tomorrow and picking it up.

My apologies for the inconvenience.

Best of luck in your search,
Alford "

Hmmm yeah so its not happening, I guess the ones that thought it was crazy for me to even consinder this car got thier wish ....funny though how this thread has brought out some "opinion's" (and I say that lightly) if you dont go to a shop that is suggested your crazy not a good way to get business for that shop in my opinion

Don't worry, another car will come along. Sometimes even a 911-V8 conversion.
