I hope the PPI goes well. I had the opportunity to drive a 5sp euro a few years ago, you won't be disappointed. As you see the 928 isn't exactly embraced by the larger P-car community, but they don't know what they're missing...

I can tell you the 928 is a really comfortable road car. Drive it for 8 hours and you want to drive it for another 8 and the damn thing gets 20mpg on the road. Is it better than a 911? The answer is no. Is a 911 better than a 928, again, the answer is no. They are very different cars. Don't let the 911 Turks on this board disuade you from taking a well researched thought out leap. It will help if you can do some of your own work. There is a good 928 support group out there, Renlist has a very active forum of 928 junkies. There is a 928 meeting at Dulles at the end of this month, the Frenzy. Check PCA and come out.

PS I can easily spend as much money, and have, on a 911 as I do on the 928 and as yet, have not adjusted my first 928 valve!

I have looked into buying a 928 for a couple years. The advice from experienced owners is that the drivetrain is very reliable, but needs regular maintenance service (ie timing belts). The caution they give is toward all the electrical and vacuum power accessories the car has. They can be expensive to replace with original new parts (still leaves reman & used) and faults can be difficult to track down. Some patience and hands on ability is necessary. Each Porsche model has its plus's and negative's. Read some 928 forums and get a PPI before buying.

I wonder what all these electronic wonders we buy now and drive will be like in 20 or 25 years? Can someone say 'maintainability' without a pang of worry!

Having spent quite a bit of time in the right seat of Tom Falkenberg's 600+ HP stroked and blown 928 lightweight monster, I'm a believer. That is one righteous fast car. It might be a bit beyond the average dual use street/track 928, but it certainly shows that they are extremely quick when well prepared.

I'll admit to having researched the 928 deeply. Almost bought two before I finally saw some sense and bought #11. The devil is still there, naggin away.

That's Jason and me out of the closet, I guess. Nasty HP habit needs attention.

This thread seems to have generated quite a bit of interest. I think there may be a lot of "closet fans" Jason! Dogan just phoned me telling me it would be twice as expensive as he initially thought to do the leakdown/compression. Are your thoughts that it is absolutely essential to do these? The car has 72k miles. They are going to start with the standard PPI and give me a call with overall condition and then go from there.

Well, I just got off the phone with Charlie. He's a great guy to talk to. He certainly didn't hold anything back! Although there is a lot of new stuff on this car, he didn't think it was for me. When asked what I wanted it for and telling him DE's and a weekend toy, he said get a Carrera. This one has a weak 2nd gear that he thought would eventually require a rebuild. Of course pushing it on a track wouldn't do anything good for that problem! That sounds like suspiciously low mileage to me because the transmission was rebuilt at 50K. Of course, I don't know exactly what was done for that rebuild. It could have been every gear but 2nd!!! I am now officially "on hold" again. This is getting tough to convince my wife of a car I should get only to personnally back out! Of course, if the transmission went out, I could part the car out and probably make most of the money back because of all the upgrades that have been done.

Get the Carrera. Parts for them grow on trees and everyone knows how to work on them. They're far more owner-friendly.
