I have had both the Sig 226 and Glock 19 as issued sidearms. The Sig is far superior in my opinion however our Sigs were "tuned". If you are looking for an accurate and ergonomic handgun check out the Smith M&P. If I were too buy another it would be the M&P.

Thanks for all the great tips! I should be getting to the shooting range and rent a P226, before dropping money on one. I had a HK USP.40SW, a long time ago, and trade it (with an HK91 rifle) toward a Beretta double barrel. The HK felt good in my hand (maybe a little big) but I didn't like the recoil of a .40. I think I'll like a 9mm recoil more, but won't know until I fire a few rounds.
I should have made myself clear that I'm looking for a piece to that can protect my home and be taken to the range for fun shooting at target.

Very well put Scott! I have a Sig 229 Equinox shoots 40 S&W's and it feels great to me, it is a bit heavy but stable when firing. I did replace the grips after purchasing and that alone made a big difference in comfort.

If you have been to Blue Ridge, you are near Silver Eagle in the Sterling area. They are across the street from where Dominion Brewery ran their operation. Very nice, good selection of rentals, and they have some sales stuff. Range is much cleaner, better lit than Blue Ridge, and there are safety officers who will actually watch what is going on.
Lots of sound advice here. I have the 226 Compact - nice overall. I like revolvers a bit more, but have plenty of both. For strict paper punching, I support .22, and 9mm is good. If you choose to reload, it opens up many calibers, but that is a different rabbit hole.

We're not Assassins! If you catch him then it's Plushycide! Now if you spot him roaming free in his natural habitat and whisper under your breath, "I said no trespassing, varmint!" Then you are good and it is sport.
