You can make one from an old fridge compressor from the dump. Get the compressor and power cord. Try and find one that was standing up after it was pitched and the compressor oil will likely still be in the compressor when you cut it out of the fridge. This method will not pull down to 0.0 millbar but can pull down more than enough for automotive use. Solder on a fitting to the suction side and be sure there is some compressor oil in the compressor befor you turn it on. Have inline cut off valves so you can start and stop it with the valves shut as well as store it with both suction and discharge closed. Plug it in open both valves slowly and let her run til the guage pulls down. this can take an hour with some systems. Do not let the r134 oil and the R 12 or R22 oil mix ether way. Move valves slowly to keep the oils from foaming up.

I have a real one BTW. They are not too expensive all in all considering what AC service costs nowadays.

The pump should have fresh oil in it (read as it should be flushed after each pump down) as it will get contaminated doing a pump down. You can pick some up at an auto parts store. Also, there are some good "how to" articles out there.

I have most of the gear (pump, gauges) that were my father's (for residential work) but not the r134 conversion fittings for the gauges. I have not had a need to convert anything nor do any A/C work

By the way, you have to be careful when charging your system with the new r134 as the volume you'll need to charge it is not the same as what is needed to fill it using r12 (I.e., it is not a 1:1 match with r12 as you will need more r134 or the other way around, i forget now). If you don't know this already, you'll see it mentioned in some of the how to articles.

I have the adapters to convert the R12 lines to the R134 fittings. The figure for the conversion is R12X.8=R134. I use the formula of R12X.9=R134 this will compensate for line loss. No additional thinking is required.
