993 if you plan to keep tracking and driving on the road. 930s are great cars, no doubt, but not something I personally would want as a track car.

yeah, it's a bit of an on/off switch... but that can be worked around some.... don't let it drop below 3.5k... not hard on the track... update the turbo and boost control and you'll minimize the lag... (if it's someone's track toy, most likely it's already been done)
then again, maybe once you drive it you'll change your mind Ted. |

I see times have changed since last week
Honestly, If you are going to drive this car as a DD I would get the 993. It seems the 993 is a bit more civilized than the 930. However, I certainly can't blame you if you get the 930. I would almost kill for a matching '89 930 I'm hardly an expert, but I hear the >'89 930 5spd conversion is prohibitively expensive and only done by 930 devotees with ridiculously deep pockets. In the end, don't sell your car for the very reasons we spoke of last week. I mean having 2 Porsche's isn't too much of a wallet drain.

If you want to experience the thrill of turbo power, let me give you the keys to the 94 Supra TT and you will understand Noah's point. If want a deceptively excellent track/daily driver, try the 996. They are getting cheaper. But my guess is you might be thrilled to be at the leading edge of the P-car track evoluion, so.....how about a Boxster with a bad motor (est. $10K?), and a used 996 3.4 liter 300 hp motor ($5 K?)? Strip out the non-essentials ( a la the piece in Excellence?) and you have the P-car equivalent of the Lotus Elise for 1/3 the cost and probably as good power to weight, or better. Plus, you could get all your buddies to join in as there are increasing numbers of less expensive Boxsters and probably (?) 996 motors as well. Heck, you could be the club el presidente!

Why not just go for the 993 TT and enjoy the best of both worlds.

My impression is that, as a general matter, turbos, and the 930s in particular, are better for the street, and normally aspirated cars are better for the track. In addition to all of the issues involving lag, a turbo just adds a whole other level of complexity and stress on the motor. If you track the car a lot, you would stress the turbo motor more than a normally aspirated motor (although the motors in theory are designed to handle the additional stress), there are more things that can go wrong, and it would cost you more if something went wrong. I am sure it would be great fun. I personally want a 930, so I am not saying I don't understand the appeal (or that I woudn't get one myself). I think the logical thing is to look at how you would use it. Plan on using it for the street primarily for the weekends? 930, no question. Plan on using it for DEs and on the street, consider the n/a.

Oh yeah, I have a line on a beautiful 930 that is in excellent condition. If you would rather have a red one, let me know and I can put you in touch with the owner . . . (if I don't win the lottery myself so that I can buy it and a tow vehicle and trailer and a couple of spare 944 motors, and a pimped out Cayenne, and a yacht, and a Chateau in Bordeaux and . . . )
Please let me drive the 930 if you get it.

They're damned fun...but for the track? No." Oh, this is so not true. I've instructed in many, and I've driven many. The key to an effective track experience is keeping the revs up (no less than 2.5-3K). I've found the cars to be amazing responsive and just down-right scarey fast! Turn 1-2 complex at Summit becomes more of a knife-edge, while T3 is just plain FUN! Don't dismiss 930s because of the huge (and justifiable) urban legend. Do it, and never, never look back. Besides, I'd hate to visit BUDS and McP's to tell them that one their graduates has become emasculated. . . |
