Default portable air tank

A few of us were talking about portable air tanks out at Summit Point a couple of weeks back... how it would be nice to have a Dorki tank to share.

I found and bought one at Walmart for $17.50. At 7 gallons, it isn't as small as I wanted (it won't fit through my roll-bar into the back seats) but it should fit nicely in the passenger footwell.

My only concern is the plastic pressure guage -- it feels pretty fragile. At least it can be easily replaced with a higher quality unit if it does break.

I'll be bringing the tank to VIR.

All are welcome to use it.

I have one made from an old refrigerant bottle which is a little smaller than a propane tank for your grill.
There is a kit sold for a few $ at HVAC parts places that do this.

I bet someone makes one for a propane tank.
What did it cost for the real deal?
Hey, I just remembered I have an old 2 gal water heater at home. Maybe that's the right size?

Good move, John.
I picked up a 7 Gallon Campbell-Hausfield tank at WallyMart - they did not have the 10 gallon model that I really wanted. Having a trailer meand I no whave an obligation to accumulate lots of trackside stuff to haul around.

I agree that the fittings look cheap. Might try to get some decent pieces on mine, which will probably cost more than the tank itself. Oh well.....

Been there, done that, found that any tank that you can carry in a Porsche rarely holds enough air to fill all 4 tires from street to track pressures. I bring a small compressor everyone can use. Fill tank first, use tank while others use pump, refill tank for later.

Why not get a T fitting & extra hose for “unofficial SP Dorki air station upgrade”?

This might be a stupid question...but what happened to the air hose at summit point out near the gas pumps? Its what I've always used and was definitely there last summer.

David,

Agree that 7 gals. isn't enough to fill 4 empty tires... but figured it would be sufficient to handle fine-tuning of pressures between run sessions. I did adjust pressures on all 3 cars in my garage using the tank... had to add a lot of air on my wife's car but I only used about 30 psi out of the tank (from 120 to 90).

May be another waste of money, but at $17 figured it was worth a try. I can always slap some porsche stickers on it and Ebay it for $100! 8)

Didn’t mean to imply bad idea just that you may have to keep running back & fourth to the air station. ‘Course, where the Dorki parked last time - not a bad trip

I have a small pancake compressor that I use to hual around but all the tracks have air and my 25 year old recycled R22 tank will last all day topping and tickeling ait pressures on tires so it stays home. Tanks weigh little and are never around or full when you need then when lent out to others. Ask me how I know...

No Can Do reusing a Propane tank. Against DOT laws and the threadded fitting is left handed. (Not that that would stop a Dorki)
