Another here, heading to Knoxville and then down - Tim and Tim, if the cruise director is up for it we'll join you since we're still looking for a good place to set up.

My father the astronomer is the cruise director. He's been on several eclipse expeditions, the first being to French Polynesia literally just before I was born. I've never gone with or seen a full eclipse, so this will be a treat. He's been preparing: new telescope, old telescope, filters, and camera gear. I'm making a pinhole camera, for giggles.

Dr Devinney knows his stuff and is fun, too.

I have a friend currently driving from Boston with his 8" telescope (small for him, but that is huge to travel with). If it's your first total eclipse, don't concern yourself with photos - there will be plenty online. Just look at the sun (binoculars are great, but there's a lot of movement, so you might want to look through a telescope because of the mount). It's really beautiful. Another cool thing - the last bit before (and first after) totality is Baily's beads - which is the sun peeking through the mountains around the edge of the moon. I found it cool just knowing what that was.

During totality it is safe to view the Sun through unfiltered binoculars or a telescope. As soon as the first bright "beads" appear it's time to go back to the solar filters.

I rate it a 'meh'. And now covered by clouds here in Alexandria.

80% unfortunately doesn't look like much when using a viewer. might have been better with glasses, but the box-viewer made it look like only 20% was blocked, and looking at a smartphone screen in 'selfie' mode also did not look like 80% blockage. Dang refraction, etc...
