While hooked up to the Durametric you might want to check your ECU rev report too just for curiosity sake...

Our 996's clutch came apart pulling into drive from weekend trip. Could not shift though car would run.... left in street and called AAA for roll back to Intersport. Had the update done at same time as new clutch (2003 3.6 engine)

ive researched this too (talked to P-techs, indys, blah blah blah) and if i understood the theory correctly, there could still be a prob despite cam dev being w/in OEM spec. i thought the true indicator was the difference between cam dev measurements during the life of the car. i.e. if it stays the same, not much to worry about. is this not correct?

You are correct.

Cam Deviation is at the far end of process driven by the IMS and is the result of a number of internal factors including timing chain stretch, plastic rail wear, tensioner performance, the ability of the Variocam actuator to 'fix' things, and the actual timing set on the cams. Within OE specs is a broad range and though my sample is <5 it seems like the neat features of Variocam were taken as a reason to not set timing in the middle of the range. If it was in range, meh, alles gute.

Think about how the failure of the IMS bearing would impact timing. Until it actually fails catastrophically, in which case you will have a very sudden, very large cam deviation you can tell your banker about, the impact will be a lot of small noise deviation introductions that lead to wear in the rails, tensioners and chains that leads to longer and larger cam shaft timing deviations that the Variocam has to make up for. If it was built near the edge of the OE spec it can then move out of spec.

It is a diagnostic tool to be watched over time (and heavily used during a build to set and reset timing). Which is why it creeps everyone out that you can't easily tell directly what's going on with the bearing.

last night i started the boxster again

seemed like less vibration this time

still no noise that i can tell

shifted in all gears, no joy, and no problem getting into each grear

one thing i noticed was the clutch peddle seemed very light

also checked the brakes and the brake fluid level, they are fine and so is the brake level

i suppose it could be a linkage issue

This makes no sense to me unless no joy means the car will not move no matter what gear you are in and you tried all of them and it went into gear each time with a cachunk from the rear of the car.

If this is the case then you have no clutch and/or pressure plate working (there is no linkage to the clutch, it is hydraulic). Tow it to the shop and have them pull the transmission and see what's what.
