Took a class at Central Virginia Tactical w/ Ed Shell this weekend. Learned a LOT and had a blast. Would recommend it to anyone who wants to try out long distance. I'd only shot informally to ~400yds before. Here I am at the end of the 2nd day on a 1200yd target (0.7 miles.) The target is under the very tip of the arrow. 3 round hay bales(and target) just below and left are 1035 yds. Hay bales/target you can't make out in the clump of trees a little farther left is 1135yds. I'm helping spot for a friend in this pic - thus the open bolt. 12.0mil dialed in for Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor 140gr ELD. Shoots about a mil flatter than the older AMAX.

At 1200yds, its a little under 2sec flight time and a little over 3sec sound return time. So if you have electronic muffs turned up you can hear the 'ping' ~5 sec later. There is even enough time to cycle the bolt before you can spot your own impact (or miss)

^ nice! My military quals were NMT 300 yards. Would like to try this too. Did they provide long guns or was it bring your own?

+1 Mother Nature can kiss my sedentary *ss

During tactical training loved to watch the Barrett snipers and all the dust lift up around them. Like watching an Abrams fire. Shock and Awe for sure.

Tnx. Ed has a few to rent but everyone brought their own. Four 6.5CM RPRs, two 308 R700s, and a 308 AR10. You really need a 20MOA+ mount to be able to have enough elevation adjustment to reach out past 1000yds. The fellow w/ the AR10 maxed out his elevation knob at ~800yds and used reticle tics w/ holdover to get to 1000 but his marks stopped there and he couldn't go any farther (175gr 308 needs ~17mil of elevation adj out there IIRC.) The guys w/ ~15x max scopes had trouble spotting their own shots past about 800 and had to reply on the spotters to call adjustments. The others w/ ~25x max scopes could see their own and help the spotters out. The spotter calling the wind is more important than the tool behind the trigger. Ed had 2 experienced helpers spotting and calling it for us.

It rained like hell part of Sunday morning which was a little inconvenient at first but was fun once we settled into it. Was a neat experience.

No kidding that the wind rules with a 2 second flight time. Looks like time well spent. How did you do?

I'm currently limited to my Enfield Mk4 w/a pedestrian Busnell sight and some FMJ 303 Brit. match ammo. Still sounds like fun though.

Maybe I'll check out the Quantico ranges this summer. They used to let vets shoot there on occasion.

Thanks for the extra info and adding something new to my bucket list boy-o!

Thanks for the post, sounds like a good time. My 'distance' shooting is maybe 300yds at a steel plate. Simple but hitting it with 7.62x39 is a hoot.

Sure looks like tons of fun. My S&W MP-15 Sport won't do much good beyond 400-500 yds though.
