It's time for my 914 to assume its natural position -- up on jack stands.
I'm going to drop the engine on my 914 this Saturday for basic maintenance (clean, replace vacuum and fuel lines, repaint tins, etc). I'm going to start around 1pm. Would anyone be interested in coming over to help (or at least kibbutz)? I've never dropped a 914 engine before, so any experience would be greatly appreciated. The plan is to get the engine & trans out of the car, get them separated and then get the engine onto the stand. If I can get that done, with all removed parts bagged & labeled, I'll be happy. With any luck, should only take an hour or two. Last edited by BillC; 12-15-2015 at 04:54 PM. |

iirc, they weight about 300lbs, so don't drop it on your foot.
Putting in stainless lines through the tunnel to the tank? What about within the compartment.. rubber? stainless? (I assume your 914 is still injected?) Despite owning a couple of 914's over the years I've never done a 914 drop myself. I assume you've scoured the web for how to's and hints? Sorry I can't make it out to watch/help etc. Is your 914 a tail shifter or side shifter (I forget what year it is)

I already have a full set of replacement stainless fuel lines and hoses (for both tunnel and compartment), as well as a new clutch cable and shift bushings. I've been waiting for the engine drop to also put those in, since I figure it'll be much easier with the engine out. Also planning to replace the battery tray and clean up the hellhole area.
My plan (hope?) is to get everything done in time to reinstall the drivetrain before the weather gets nice again in the spring. It's a side-shifter. '73 was the first year for the side-shift trans. Last edited by BillC; 12-15-2015 at 08:53 PM. |

Could you email me an address/time? Not sure if I'll be avail. I have to go pickup a trailer and stuff on Sat but might be able to make it over. I don't think you live very far away. If I grab the kid and bring him along I might be able to get more of a pass from the wife.
BTW, Do you have a son that goes to Kennedy HS? I think my wife may have met you during a meeting earlier this year.

It would have been fun to help while libating. But we also have some family obligations all weekend. Knowing your attention to detail, I'm sure everything will go very smoothly.
Maybe I can attend on reinstall day.

Yes, my oldest son is a senior at Kennedy. I met your wife at back to school night. Unfortunately, I didn't have much of a chance to talk with her. Attention to detail? Hope so. I also hope that day isn't too far into the future. It seems like too many 914 "quickie" projects become multi-year projects. I'm afraid of what I might find "while I'm in there". |
