Took a while, but here is the pic. Sorry for the angle, was trying to get it past the tire, but the item is vertical. Despite what it looks like in the picture, the item is in fact square with rounded corners (whats left of it).

I have not. That was next on my list, but have been so busy I have not even pulled the car cover off in three weeks except to take this picture. That is a real possibility I had not thought of though.

agree look like it was a charcoal canister. If so at least the charcoal fell out rather than geting sucked into the motor as some can do.

x3 on charcoal canister. Much better for the charcoal to fall out of the rusty thing than to burst into your just-rebuilt engine like a former club president!

Update: After digging a bit I did confirm it is a charcoal canister. Apparently the reason for the mystery is related to it being a euro car, and not a standard porsche unit or location. Additionally I have come to find that other euro cars of the same era had the same problem with it being totally disintegrated despite the rest of the car being rust free.

Followup question: since it is now wide open, I assume this means there is now a vacuum leak, and potentially and open air vent from the gas tank/filler. Question is, can I just pull the remains out and cap off the vacuum line, or do I need to install a new canister?
