The belt was a continental.
I've used these for years on BMW timing belt changes and other cars with no failures. Heck, we even run NAPA belts on some of our p-cars ... and they don't fail.

Have no idea if it was tensioned properly since it happened 3 days after I got it home.
That sux.

I know there is a p-car device for tensioning ... however, when I used to change belts on volvos ... you'd have to get under there while the motor was running and tension the idler "just enough" so that the balance shaft [I think] wouldn't howl / groan. I am assuming you can't do the same with '44s b/c to many pieces are off the motor to let it run?

One of the dorki [you?] must have the '44 porsche tensioner tool ...

Thanks Jase. I got a "cricket" from Rennbay. Worked great. The belt did not look old to me. This leaves several possibilities . . . defective belt, defective installation, or new old stock belt that was dry rotted.

Chris: I'm still in . . . motor is back together, just waiting for the injectors to be returned from the injector place. It'll be at tech on Sat.

I saw this on another board on Thursday.

Scared me into stopping by ASG on my way home this past Friday and asked for an estimate to replace my 40K Km (I think) belt.

Sorry to hear about the bad luck, glad to see you are almost back on the road.

Out of curiosity, what was the estimate? Did it include any “while you are in there” items

Mike,

DIY in true Marc A./ Dave R. Dorki style ...unless you are turning into one of those new 99X REWC types ...

Glad to hear the bottom end wasn't affected. Happened to me with a bad tensioner on my 124 spyder and the pistons needed help (difference between a FIAT and a Porsche?). Hope the weather hold out for ya.

Does anyone find it just a little suspect that Marc found a reason to pull this engine apart within a week of owning the car???

Truly ugly luck that the belt failed after little more than a year. Something wrong with that picture - either tensioning or a faulty belt. Makes me want to go check mine [installed January last] every time I run the car!

Good news is that Marc is now a FEWC god, and that his bores and pistons were in perfect shape. If you have half the fun that Todd is having with his 944 Marc, it will all be worth it.

I will let you know as soon as I get it. I told them it was no real rush as the car came with a sheet that read "The toothed gear drive belt was replaced.... 96K KM." I am at 134K Km, and that 40K Km is around 24K Miles. While they are in there, I think is the water pump.

Would if I could, but this is WAY above my level of knowledge/tool supplies and I have always felt bad asking others to basically direct me/do the work when I screw up seeing as I am not that much help when I am around for others' projects.
