Default 996 tiptronic transmission fluid change

Getting close to 90K. Should I just drain and change the fluid, or change the gasket and filter too? It looks a little complicated doing the whole filter/gasket pan removal...

Do the filter. The 5HP19 has known weaknesses. Filling the fluid is a PITA already so I wouldn't skimp on the filter. Its not complicated, just messier and a little more time consuming.

Given their fragile nature I wouldn't use the penzoil listed in the renntech article either. I'd go for one of the approved full synthetics. Sure its pricey (fwiw, the identical vw/audi stuff is cheaper than the porsche labeled bottles) but its not like you do it every 5k miles.

IMO, after replacing the wife's boxster tip TWICE and reading up on the 5HP19 to great detail, I think people should be doing their ATF far more often then recommended.

Edit: Whatever you do, do NOT turn the engine off before putting the fill plug back in

The 5HP19 is the ZF? I thought my '02 tiptronic was the Daimler Chrysler one and not the ZF?

I was unaware they was anything other than the ZF. My wife's was an '01 box and it was also used in the 996. But Daves link clearly shows a daimler unit was also used on some models. Learn something everyday. You're going to need to know which one you really have

i recently did the gasket/filter on my jeep...was actually quite a simple procedure...

the issue for me with the automatics was how to change the fluid int he torque convertor without the machine which pushes fluid up through the convertor and the cooler...since i had to pull the tranny anyways to swap a seal, wasnt an issue as the TC had to come out anyways...

I need to do the same to my e30(though dont plan to pull the tranny)...i saw a youtube video where one does the filter/gasket and refill the sump, then run the car with one of the cooler connections running to a bucket and filling the sump at the same time, until the clean fluid came out...anyone done this?

do the tiptronics have a torque convertor?

All automatics have a torque converter. (incl tiptronics.)

Newer electronically controlled transmissions like SMG & PDK are really manual transmissions w/ the shifter and clutch 'simply' being controlled by motors being run by a computer. Those don't have torque converters but real clutches just like a manual (because thats what the transmission really is.)
