before you do any real prepping make sure you Choose and Talk to the Paint Shop about any compatibility issues...

If you have to do any filling or priming before they get it, you want to make sure it is all compatible with their paints and processes...

Also ask them for any tips about stripping the car, and what body/interior parts should be removed...

Thanks guys, I am going to follow up on all the leads here. I just have a hard time justifying $5,000 for a paint job. I know I am looking for a deal and am hoping someone out there would rather have $3k then nothing if they are between projects. Looks like no matter what I can expect to be doing a lot of the work (not that I mind much).

Like others have said, the majority of the cost is in the prep work. I can do the same quality paint job over two different prep jobs and there would be a noticable difference in the end. I'm sure you've seen glossy paint over top of ripples and sand scratches. The more of that you can do, the closer you will get to a nice paint job for 3K. Yes I could, and have done many paint jobs for 3k and less when the other work was done by the owner. I'm always willing to answer questions and give guidance whenever you need.

I got my track car painted at Maaco. I supplied my own paint, hardner, primer etc.. I did most of the prep work and it shows (as this was my first time). It's not pretty, but I did learn a lot.

If I had to do it again, I would go the same route only do a much better prep job. Maaco was fine using my paint and following my instructions. I used the shop in Silver Spring off of Brookville Rd. To shot just the exterior ran about $400. They also shot the cockpit and inside both trunks. It's not a great job (only because of the prep work) and they shot it well, but I'm not complaining for about $1600 total cost. It's a track car and will never be a beauty queen. Had I spent more time on the prep and purchase better paint ... $3k would have given me a decent paint job. Just my .02 cent worth.

Just for comparison, I had my 87 911 painted about 4 years ago. Metalflake diamond blue. It was painted in upstate New York. Windows out, trim off, panels removed, hand sanded to original primer layer, one small rust spot weld-repaired, and resprayed in Glasurit. The cost was $4500 cash for a "near show car" finish. My point is that it might be more cost effective to have it painted in a lower cost of living area.
