Default Need: 944 CAT

I failed emissions the other day and am looking for anyone local who has the CAT or the entire mid-pipe with the CAT for a late 944. I can order one but I'd like to just borrow one, pass emissions by monday, renew the plates, and then go about finding the permanent pipe.

Anybody got one laying around off a cup car or a track only car??

NOTE: I haven't verified the CAT is dead but I plan on trying to do that in the next two days using an IR thermometer and a trick the mechanic mentioned.

Warm up car (ie, go for a spirited drive never going higher than 3rd gear), have friend hold at about 2.5 - 3k rpm (unfortunately not under load) and the temperature post cat should be higher than the pre cat temperature. Now I just need to find out the range I am looking for and to find a good IR thermometer that isn't going to cost much more than about a hundred dollars.

From what I have found so far, the cat can get up to about 1450 and newer models are in the 1600 range.....Sears stuff stops at about 1200F. Which may be high enough since the cat is much further down the line then where you would typically pickup exhaust gas temps using an in car guage.

Worth a shot at least. I get a new tool and don't pay a mechanic 90 dollars to "diagnose" the problem.

EDIT: So far this seems to be the best option, it at least will read 1400F. The next nicest one that will read any higher is $179.99: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...easuring+Tools

$100?? Can't you just buy a used cat for that price? I bet dc auto has one.

Weld in is cheaper. I found the entire mid pipe for $212 in FL. Might be new too.

The shop wanted $90 to diagnose. I would rather buy the IR thermo and diagnose myself.

At any rate, intersport and the emissions guys think the cat is gone because the NO levels are high. I also have a new Bosch 13011 oxygen sensor to install.

I can't think of what else it could be. Air and fuel filters are new. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and timing belt is new.

I should have just ordered the cat from FL today or just get a weld in from Napa.

Got a 951 piece from the down pipe. Block off the wg tie in? Also got a universal high flow weld in (2 1/4 if I 'memeber right). Either is yours for the price of beer.

Be careful purchasing inexpensive cats. Most of the time they will not work well enough to do the job. I have seen this many, many times. I have a 88 911 at one of the shops right now that has a cheap aftermarket cat on it and it will not pass.

Do your best to find a used OE Porsche cat and you will be better off. If DC Auto can't get you one try German Auto Dismantlers.
