Picked up a Sony XBR6 in late December. Have not sprung for HD cable yet, but there are a couple enhanced definition channels on Comcast I can pick up with the cable run straight into the TV. It does a great job on SD signals, which is something I was initially concerned about.

This past summer, I bought a refurbished 47" Vizio from Compusa.com for about $900 + $200 shipping. They were selling for around $1,300 or $1,390 at Costco at that time.

If you do a side-by-side comparison with a top of the line Sony or Samsung, you will notice a superior picture on those devices. But, they probably cost twice as much.

I'm very happy that I went with that Vizeo as compared to a $2,000 Sony or Samsung. But then again, my Vizeo is out in the garage. However, I probably watch that TV more than any other TV in my house.

Agree 100%, my point was that if you want a plasma, you better get it quick before they stop selling them. The Pioneer Elite KURO 50" plasma has probably the best picture of any TV ever made - and you can get them at a fraction of their original price now that Pioneer has discontinued them.

i don't know the picture quality of this, so it's purely from a novelty aspect, but hitachi has some seriously skinny screens:

my panasonic plasma is great. recently picked up a year old hitachi plasma to replace my lcd projection sony. although they both have a nice picture, i can't really compare the plasmas since only one of them is running bluray

if you expect to use that format in the near future, you need to get 1080, no matter what set you pick up

Mine is the 630. Same as the above but w/ matte screen. Room gets lots of light, so the loss of contrast was worth it to fight the glare.

x3 or 4 on the Samsung. Get a 650 if you can, dont need 750/850/950. I paid 1500 in Nov for 46er and they've come down since. Works well in sunlit room and at 135d angle. You can spend days here looking around for opinions, deals and settings. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/

LOL, you think? I bought that little sony LCD in 2002. They keep inventing new stuff though so I keep postponing the upgrade. First it was 1080p resolution, then it was 120hz refresh rate, then the LED backlight models are just now coming out, plus Sony is ahead of the curve with a tri-color LED backlight (the XBR8 ). The next thing everyone's talking about OLED panels, but those are still 1-2 years out.

I'm waiting for the tech to settle down a bit. I hate buying some big ticket item only to have a newer, better one that costs 1/2 the price go on sale 6 months later.

That Pioneer KURO plasma is tempting tho... a $5k top-end tv for 1/2 price, just cause it's a discontinued model.

If you are waiting for the tech to settle down you'll never buy TV or a stereo. Open your eyes, choose what looks best and buy. Frankly, it's the same with P-cars: wish I had an '09 instead of an '02, but.... Bought a 40" Sony XBR couple of years ago. We are very happy, get lots of positive oohs and awwhhs on the picture from those with newer and bigger screens but, most importantly, we've been very happy with it since we got it. We use Fios hi-def service (again, a matter of opinion) and spend way too much time in front of the tube (wait, I guess that dates me!). Can't wait for F-1 season in hi-def to start in a couple of weeks!

ditto on the glare. i was very worried about that as our living room has 6 windows and a french door, all with transom windows, within sight of the tv. turns out the glare is FAR less than it was with our old tv. dunno how they do it but it's amazing.

This TV will be upstairs, where there are two small sunlights, neither of which hit the tv.

With Amazon do you pay tax or shipping on a large item like that? Our sales tax is 9.75% here in TN. All I've ever ordered from Amazon is books and movies.
