An electrician (good guy, 964 owner, recommended by ModelTee and Matt D.) checked everything out but couldn't find anything wrong (he did replace the GFI unit suspecting it was wearing out). He suspects a bug got into the halogen lamp where I was sitting and fried itself, thus creating the localized burning smell.

To add to my fail, I made a comment to my wife of how similar the smells of her burning dinner and the frying bug were. My self-prepared dinner of coldcuts that evening wasn't all that bad...
