Default Tech for the opcomming DE event at Summit Point

The Tech inspection session for the May 22nd and 23rd Summit Point Drivers Ed will be at Auto-Therapy in Gaithersburg MD. Roger Brater, the owner and our host for the day will be on hand to help out with all things regarding our Porsches. Roger has extensive experience tuning, preparing and repairing all types of Porsches from early short wheelbase 911s all the way up through the 996.
Tech inspections are open to all members. If you are interested in Drivers Ed and have questions about the program and its requirements, come to an inspection. Club members will be on hand to answer questions about the driving program and my experienced tech team will answer any questions you have about your car.
During the tech event we will also demonstrate how to rebuild a constant velocity (CV) joint. All modern Porsches use CV joints to transfer the power from the transmission to the drive wheels. Two CV joints make up a half shaft and there are two or four half shafts per car depending on the Porsche model. With proper care the CVs will last for many years and many miles. Each CV has a protective rubber boot that needs to be inspected for wear and damage and the CV joints themselves need to be cleaned and rebuilt periodically. We plan to show how to disassemble, clean, reassemble, lubricate and reinstall the complete half shaft in the car. We will have demonstrator joints for folks to practice disassembling (easy) and reassembling (not as easy unless you know the trick).

Event Info:
9:00 AM to 2:00 PM demo at 12:00 p.m.
May 15 2004 at Auto-Therapy, Inc.

Great! I was just about to do this today. I guess I will wait until after I learn the trick this Saturday. Thanks for posting this Kurt.

Do those CVs come from a yellow car?

Nope, that set went back in. I have two CV joints that are all clean and ready to play with. One set marked up with hint lines and one without.

If anyone has an old assembled half shaft in any condition that is destined for the junk yard I would like it to use as a demonstrator. What I have now is the joints only and I also want to show clip removal and the like.

My axles are out anyway. I have some grease. How do you repack them?
I might make it this weekend, I know my axles can!

These are rebuilt units I bought from vertex about a year ago. David mentioned at the tech inspection (Curries) that they felt maybe a little dry.

Do you want to mess with them or keep clean?

It'sgreat to have one of these on our side of the ocean. I hope I can make it.

They are fine ... and will be for several more years unless you do 20,xxx miles a year. Save your time / $ for your other projects.

I would prefer not to rebuild a set at the tech, just have a set to show. I have a clean set of joints only that is easy to use to learn reassembly without making a mess in someone else's shop.

but Kurt...you're taking all the fun out of repacking CV's.
I will reluctantly admit to repacking CV's on one of my 914's several years ago. It was a fairly easy job but it may have taken 6 hours or better from pulling the axles to reinstalling them, probably because I didn't have a clue what I was in for. Without doubt the dirtiest job on a car, at least that's true with the first set.
