Yea. for just over a decade! They do well cross country, but can’t seat even four people without gear comfortably, ford a stream at any real speed without destroying the engine, or sit unattended if the parking brake breaks without resting against a tree. You can’t get in or out quickly with gear on, the plastic top comes predisposed to ripping from the factory, and there is no ventilation except seasonal (hot in summer, cold in winter). They are fast, climb obstacles at ridiculous angles, get OK fuel mileage but come on... $1.2B in development you ought to be able to climb in and out without rounding off your knees or freeze your azimuth off.

If you drive the vehicle as it was made to be driven. Nice and slow. It isnt about speed...Plus, the vehicle certainly wasnt about creature comforts. It was all about off road capabilites. Yes, I am sure they could have worked a little harder to refine the vehicle, but there isnt much out there that can beat it off the road.

My dad's told a few stories about driving the 2.5 ton after firing the cannon all night. He didnt mention the truck being loud at all.
You see them come up on ebay once in a while. Sure, totally impracticale, that's why I'm interested!

Actually, I didn’t miss this one either, went into the service in ‘66. By the way I remember it was unstable in corners at almost any speed. IIRC later versions had full six point cages added with door/window nets and seat belts that were mandatory for all passengers. Looked funny seeing soldiers driving around with window nets in place. Never crawled under one or out from under one but I think they had swing axles front and rear.
http://www.4wdonline.com/Mil/M151/M151.html Now I know you like your M151 but they were flawed too! Great off road versatility but lethal at any spend above a crawl.

actually, the A2 version had the beefed up rear control arms--earlier control arms being the root of all evil. this baby does quite well on the road and highway. i had a tire blow out on I95 in downtown
Richmond--no problems of loss of control--even when it was fully loaded with a ton of gear. you just have to watch the center of gravity on this one around turns. earlier verisons M151 and M151A1--they were acrobatic--at least that's how the occupants were as they were flung out of them.
