I RTFM. Actually, I read the PDF since Garmin didn't include a paper one on the box. But that's another complaint...

Right now I have it set to Fastest Route and not to avoid U-turns, highways, toll roads, unpaved roads, etc. (All the "avoid" options are unchecked.)
