There's also a guy in Indian Head MD who does all sorts of work on the cheap. He does a lot of work for 944 cup racers. No cappucchino and biscotti in the waiting room, but I hear he's cheap. You may be able to find his name on 44cup.com. Tony P may know.

+2 on Sloan at SSI. He knows these cars inside and out and will do it right..the first time.

The shop manual specifies arond 22 hours labor IIRC. If this is the original clutch you can bet it will be every bit of it. I've done this job before and because all of the exhaust and drive train need to be removed/dropped it is time consuming especially when it comes to bolts that have not been removed and have rusted for the last 20 years. There are some tricks to doing this job properly/efficiently that are not in any manual and only learned from experience.

IIRC book time is somewhere near 20. 16 I believe. Real time is closer to 14 for just the clutch for someone that has done it before. Yes it is a bit more involved than an n/a as the crossover pipe for the turbo needs to be removed. With that you get into large rusty exhaust bolts that are a major PITA to remove and most of the time need to be replaced. On top of all the other " while your in there's " listed, you can count on needing the flywheel surfaced. As for the rubber hub, the turbos never had it. Porsche only used a normal spring disc in the turbo's

So getting an aftermarket clutch kit like the Spec 4 w/o spring disc is ill-advised? Is a Sachs or other OEM rebuild kit the way to go, even with a chipped car and track use on the horizon?

Others may not agree, but I would not put a solid centered clutch on a 944. I don't know whether the Spec 4 clutch is solid centered, but assume that it is by your question. The spring centered clutch absorbs some of the shock when the power is put down to the drive shaft. This is important because it puts less "twist" on the drive shaft itself, which actually twists as well as rotates. Just my 2c.

Here's the clutch I put in before the conversion: http://www.clutchnet.com/clutches/de...s7291?sef=hcfp

Not for the street as engaging 1st and Reverse was a bit juddery but it gripped like no tomorrow.

Call Jason at Paragon and order the cup clutch kit. A little pricey but I have had one in the race car for several years with no issues.
