Default Red light camera tickets in DC -- do you really have to pay?

I got one recently following Dave, of all people. In the photos they mailed to me, you can see his green 911 speeding through the yellow, and mine in the red 0.8 seconds too late. I'm such a hazard to the public.

I know Virginia has cancelled its red light camera program, one reason being that a mailed ticked does not constitute the supplying of sufficient notice to comply with state statutory requirements. In other words, if you ignore the ticket, you can't be prosecuted.

Is there a similar loophole for DC drivers, or do I have to just take this act of naked robbery like a man and submit to being legally extorted?

Pay it. If you don't, it will come back to haunt you when you least expect it. DC is notorious for aggressive collection techniques.

Well...I'm notorious for aggressive non-payment techniques.

It's a legal reality that in Virginia, red light tickets cannot be collected on. I'm curious if the same deal holds for DC.

Unfortunately in DC they’ll boot or tow... then you must pay... or go before the judge... then pay more before you can pay still more to appeal

Be sure to let us know how it comes out

I guess the jackboot of authority is on my throat.

Here's to $75 heading into the DC government's coffers, never to be seen again...

I hate the speed/red light cameras as much as the rest, but trying to dodge it won't work in the long term. If DC is like every place else when you try to register your car you'll have to pay all fines & penaties. Not to mention you may get booted or towed, which can only happen when you're on the way to an important meeting.

It sucks, but you can pay it now or pay double later......

"do you really have to pay"

Well, last time I checked you don't really have to do anything, as long as you can live with the possible repercussions
