The '72 Targa project has been dormant but is about to come to life. I have everything I need to start (and finish?) the engine rebuild/upgrade (7R case, JE pistons, E cams, Webers), which will proceed in the next few weeks. I need some seat advice.

The original seats have worn covers and not much support either. I also have a pair of high-back seats from a slightly later car that have some split seams but are otherwise in good shape.

I know there are some seat belt issues using the later seats and I don't mind the style of the older ones, very period, etc. I will use the original seats if it's cost effective, but I think they need more work. On the other hand, I guess I can sell the later seats to make back some of the cost.

Finally to the question: is there a local trim shop that can give me some good advice and does decent work? I'm not interested in a fancy leather job or concours quality.

Not sure about local shops. I did order new covers from World Upholstery and swapped them myself. It took some time, but was not too difficult.
Having a good hog ring plier will help.

That said, the covers aren't cheap and getting new Recaro's or similar
may be even easier and not much more expensive...

I had a guy in PA do covers on my SC seats, he did great work. He also installed the headliner, perfect job. He advertises in Excellence, Classic German Interiors 610-857-9353.

I had the same dilema, my seats were torn up and just generally ugly. I didn't like the support it gave so I decided to replce them entirely
I'm going with these, i've sat in a few of these seats and they're really comfy and period correct as well.

We have a set of the seats that "I33t9eek" (a name..?) put the link in for in our '66 street / track car. Here is a pic from that page that looks similar to our setup:




Have used for sprint and enduro racing and can say they are very comfortable. If you are looking for a race bucket hold on the shoulders and lats, this isn't your seat. If you want to stay in place but have a little more "upper movement" these work fine. I like the way they look with the early LH interiors. They are a comfortable enough seat that can be used for a daily driver easily.
