I will (obviously) need some help with this, and have a couple of possible days. December 11 and December 18. That will give me Friday night to dump oil and procure supplies and tools (if I need anything in a hurry).

I plan to leave the engine out for a couple of weeks (till you all can come back ) to change the oil pressure switch. While I'm in there I'm planning on adjusting the valves and looking over anything else that might need attention while it's out using this great list:
You gotta be kidding me, I can't believe what I am reading, you mean you want to remove the engine and trans and not rebuild either of the two . I guess inspiration isn't always a good thing. All that just to clean it up and replace the oil pressure switch and adjust the valves . Talk about being anal, you planning on entering it in a concours . Just drive it like you stole it until it blows, then get a 3.6L,screw the budget. Life is short, and SC's were meant to be driven. Long hoods are the ones that require winter storage.

Chris, my sentiments exactly. It defeats the purpose of dropping the engine, right RL.

This is Justin's adapter. Check with him to borrow it, Steve. You'll be glad you did!
No plans for my engine to come out this winter, too many home remodelling projects on the horizon. Feel free to pass the jack adapter around as needed.

-Justin

Paul Wilding makes the adapter: http://www.wildingeng.com/ He sells them through PP and eBay as well.

Pari, you're talking to a guy that had no plans to drop the engine when I bought the car! Tracking it was step 1, removing the engine was the next logical step in full-fledged addiction. I guess upgrades would be next? I'm moving, moving slowly...yes.

you don't need to disconnect the a/c to adjust valves... unbolt the compressor and put it on a towel out of the way. i'm interested in helping w/drop if i can work out conflicts...

Steve,

Same, believe it or not. I bought the SC because I like the looks of the older 911's and I could afford one. Thought it was time to take a step up from vintage motorcycle ownership to car ownership. Just a weekend driver and something to tinker with.

I had no intentions of doing any 'major' work on the car or even tracking it. After my first $1300 bill in the 2nd week of owbership, I though it was time to do more DIY stuff. I then found the Pelican BBS. A friend of mine at work is a driving instructor for the Audi club (and some other clubs in the area) and had me come out for one event. Needless to say, I was hooked. Did 2 more events that year. That winter the engine came apart to take care of the faulty internal thermostat, install the hyrdaulic chain tensioners and POV.....you know what happened next.

Welcome to the slippery slope. I'll see you down here

Steve, I just don't want to see you regret taking it out when you won't be able to drive it. Um, how many miles have you put on it in a year, IMO you haven't driven it enough?
Driving the car to get a feel for it should be step 1, then doing all the regular maintenance work is step 2, tracking it is step 3, and when you know how much HP you can handle on the track then it's time for step 4 where you remove the engine and tear it down to rebuild it how you want it.
Sorry Steve, I will always be a firm believer in not removing the engine and trans unless something is really wrong and it needs a rebuild. But then again I'm a "dreamer" .

See, you guys are a different scenario. I had every intention of modifying/ doing major work to my SC before I even bought it. It was kind of like Richard and his list of mods this Saturday :P, I literally had a list of things that I would end up changing on the 911 I bought. I always knew I would want a gutted lightweight SC that was just as comfortable on the track as well as for daily driving.
