Default Seat belt law in VA

Anyone know the VA seatbelt law for harnesses? I got a Sabelt 3 point autocross belt installed in my 71 (3rd point mounted to a bar welded to the body along the firewall) and I am getting ready to go get inspected. Can I get away with that?

Thanks
Jeff

No, unless you an produce DOT paperwork for the belt, or it has the DOT tag sewn into the webbing. As for the mounting............that depends on the inspector. Sorry

Thanks Rick, so if my car originally came with just a lap belt then I can just install the lap correct?

That is correct, as long as it is of an approved type, and mounted in the same fassion used by the factory. You can have extra belts in the car as long as the factory stuff is there.

You need to have the "FMVSS" approval on the belts which is on a tag or is engraved into the mounting tabs, that is if they even look past the simple fact that you have seat belts.

Um, not sure what "brand" your '71 is, but if its a Porsche it came with a 3pt belt. Not a retractible 3pt, but a 3pt nonetheless. I do find it odd that the state would say, ok, a 35 year old belt, exposed to sunlight, cold, heat, food, "oils" etc is ok, but a 3yr old aftermarket belt is cause for concern.
